Some Good News!

Postby Dakota » Fri Oct 17, 2014 6:05 am

I told myself I was going to wait until I actually got them, but I just can't contain my excitement. :hyper:

Well, during the time where I had to board all my skinks at friends' houses, it was just a really stressful period for me. I didn't have much time to think about anything. I am honestly astonished that my blonde hair hasn't turned white! Buuuuuuut, I came up with a good idea.. class pets! My vet teacher, Dr. Rovelstad, loves the odds and ends of reptiles, especially since everyone only brings Ball Pythons to show the class - so he was all for it! I emailed him, he quickly responded saying he'd love for them to be a class pet. :)

I will be getting Maxx and Riley back. I would get Alice, too, but she is still just now getting over the stress shipping has caused her, so I thought it would best to wait.

Maxx will be going in Virginia's big 75 gallon aquarium, and Riley will be going in a 40 gallon breeder. Maxx will be put in Dr. Rovelstad's classroom (my vet teacher), and Riley will be put in Dr. Youngs' classroom (the 2nd vet teacher). Since they will be in a pretty active setting, and since I know they like to be hid away a lot, I will be blocking off 3 sides of the tank - the back, and the 2 sides.. to reduce any stress that being a classroom pet may cause. They are pretty used to me being the only person they see - it will be a wake up call when they see hundreds every day!

Since they are going to be in a classroom, I figured I'd make a setup practical, as well as aesthetically pleasing. I saved up quarters from my father (and by selling a few things), so I will have the money to buy everything I want. :D As for the soil, I will be doing:
~50% top soil
~30% premium cypress mulch
~20% leaf litter
...all mixed together. I will then be adding a bunch of sphagnum moss and more leaf litter on top of that, so if they don't feel like burrowing, they can just hide in the leaves and such. I will also be buying a bunch of fake vine. I will find a way to tangle them together or lace them to make them appear to be a bush of some sort, so they can also use that as a hide.

I will buying this stuff this weekend (maybe today), I will set up cage and test temperatures next week (probably Tuesday), and I will have them shipped the week after that.

I'm so excited! :D I've missed my little buddies. :) I'll post pictures once I get the cages set up, and when I get the boys back!

Yup! I think they are as excited as I am. He told me he wanted me to tell the whole class about them, and I was going to do a little presentation -- but I think I'm going to go with whatever pops into my head. I'm going to try not to go into too, too much detail so I don't seem boring.

Buuuut, I went and bought the stuff today. I will go out and collect the leaves for the setups tomorrow.

So, I have nothing to do today, so I figured I'd set up Riley's new cage since it will not be that heavy to carry upstairs at school. I'm going to wait until Maxx's beast cage gets to school before I even think about adding anymore weight to it (LOL).

I did:
- 60% top soil, 40% cypress for bottom layer
- 90% top soil, 10% cypress mulch for middle layer
- 80% broken up dead palm leaves, 20% top soil for top layer
- Sphagnum moss covering about 70% of top layer.
- 2 water bowls
- 2 hides (one is a dead palm leaf, other is standard half log hide)
- 1 rock to help keep nails trimmed

Maxx's 75 gallon is not done, but I thought I'd post a picture of them at school. Hopefully my little buddies will be here by next week. :D
