Brumation

Postby onesharkyboi » Mon Jan 28, 2019 2:00 pm

I got an Irian Jaya Blue Tongue Skink about 2 weeks ago. He’s three months old and healthy, but he’s trying to brumate. I read that this is not healthy for Blue Tongue Skinks under one year old. How do I stop him from brumating?

You can't really, but he may not enter a true brumation. Sometimes they do hide more, but don't end up actually sleeping during that time. In any case, it's not recommended to disturb them much, so if he does indeed decide to brumate, there's not a lot that can be done. Hopefully someone else can chip in and add what they know about brumating. My skink hasn't brumated yet, so I don't have first-hand experience

If they want to they do, regardless of conditions. It has absolutely no detrimental affects on their health if they are healthy to begin with. I've had them go into brumation at six months.
