Calcium with D3, how much?

Postby Scincus » Wed Jun 28, 2017 5:03 pm

For the breeders who use racks and cat/dog food, how do you determine how much calcium with D3 is enough? One of my babies that I produced this year looks to have what might be some tail kinks developing. I had thought I was using enough calcium with D3, but it looks like that may not be the case. There's a small possibility that perhaps the tail pattern makes it appear very slightly kinked, but I don't think that is as likely. None of the other three babies had any visible issues. Another possibility I am considering is that the skink may have been born that way, and it is just becoming more apparent as time goes on. Its sibling was born with a curled tail tip, and the mother did not eat while she was gravid, so she would not have had been consuming calcium during their development. And another question to add on, how do you know how much cal d3 is too much?

Something to think about if you are using vitD3 fortified calcium powder to supplement your skinks

Yes - I know it's not specifically targeting skinks but still relevant I think

The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity (due to overdosing with oral VitD3) is a buildup of calcium in your lizard's blood (hypercalcemia).

And there is a risk of Hypervitaminosis D , a rare but potentially serious condition. It occurs when too much vitamin D is ingested.
