Bts lays unfertilised "egg" - can she still be pregnant?

Postby Kugelberg » Wed Apr 19, 2017 10:20 am

Hi.
I have a very fat scincoides, who throw an unfertilised "egg" today.
I have witnessed a pairing at the 10. January, but I not sure if the animals were cooled sufficient, because they have only been in my possession since early December.
The female was already very fat when I got her and because of that I haven't fed her that much.
But now my quistion - is it possible she could still be carrying live babies? I know from my snake keeping that females sometimes can lay some bad eggs and then a few days after lays good ones.

Regards Alex

That's strange for it to drop an infertile egg since skinks give birth to live young. I think the only way to know for sure is to wait and see or to take it to a vet.

That's a slug or unfetilized egg. They are produced after the female is bred. Mine just gave birth today. 10 babies, 2 slugs, and one still born. Sometimes the females will eat the slugs.

My female northern dropped two of those a few days after giving birth last year. My other female bred but did not have babies, but dropped slugs. So, my observations tell that this happens after or instead of giving birth.

Those are bad observations for me :?
She threw another the day after, but is still very fat in the lower region. Unfortunately I'm out of town for two days, so I'm very anxious to get back home and see what's going on.

better be careful...she could possibly eat the babies if left in too long with her

I think they are actually fertilised but fail to form a cotyledon to the mother. She can still have the other babies normally.
If you wait, all that happens is that you get older. M. Andretti

Okay. So there's experiences with both scenarios :)

For now she seems very calm and quiet. And she's still eating and still quite round towards her hind quarters. So nothing suggests she has laid more "eggs" and eaten them afterwards.

I guess I just have to see what's happening in the next weeks. Today it's 104 days since her last pairing.
