A few questions from a newbie

You have a nice little classic indonesian there, Tiliqua Gigas Gigas. They require a higher humidity, and while 40 - 60 sounds ok, you may want to try and keep it more consistent 50 to 60%. My first instinct is to tell you to switch out the aspen portion of the substrate to cypress mulch or something more humidity friendly, but maybe you could just add a humidity hide and give him the option to choose.

Because he is indonesian he is almost certainly wild caught or from a farm and imported, the chances that he is CBB are VERY slim (not impossible perhaps...?). If he seems healthy you have nothing to worry about though, I have a couple WC who are more tame than my CBB's. It might be a good idea to get a fecal float done at the vet anyway, its usually not to expensive and will give you some piece of mind.

I'd definitely decrease the aspen in the mix, maybe do 50/50 or less on the aspen. Make sure, while using the aspen up, to add a humidity hide. The health issues that accompany low humidity for Gigas are not worth the waisted aspen by far. For your humidity hide, pick up a plastic shoe box sized container, fill it with damp, well wrung, sphagnum moss, turn it upside down and cut a entrance hole in it (don't go to big on the hole, but definitely make it an easy fit for him). Place it on the hot side of the enclosure. This is an excellent and cheap way to provide him with the necessary humidity your little guy needs.

Yes, the colours of a skink right after shed are the nicest and most vibrant, so you have that to look forward to after every shed, its always exciting. I bet your guy looks amazing, that yellow!

As for distinguishing one subspecies from another, there are some species specific threads on here, and lots of other places to read and see the examples of the differences. But the key is really just to look at a million skinks... every day, hahaha. Don't worry, as you read and see more of them you will start to see it.

6 to 8 months looks about right to me, its sometimes difficult to tell, since growth can be affected by how much and how often he eats. But in general Id say its as good an estimate as any.

Yeah I'd say every second day is good for feeding at his age. I will generally suplement mine once a week.
