We've been busy :-)

Postby The Crested Castle » Sun May 08, 2016 3:51 pm

We have been busy getting ourselves ready for the 2016 merauke breeding season! Since I last posted we have added 3 more meraukes to our family. We now have 7 of these gorgeous blue tongues and would love "one more" before we start behaviour sexing in a few months. Since I am behind in introducing our newest bts family, I may as well post new photos of everyone.

We picked this (unnamed) guy up today, he's only about 10 months old and in really good shape. We consider ourselves lucky that within 1/2 hour of being in our possession he dropped some sperm plugs! Confirmed male!

Rosie is our very social merauke. When the basking light is on, s/he is out basking. We have a good feeling this one is a girl, but that's based on nothing but wishing :-). We have since found a fantastic, coarse, coconut husk mulch that doesn't seem to affect our allergies, so everyone is on that now instead of the aspen and moss that was workable and non allergenic for us, but not ideal.

Angel is our antisocial bts. S/he is almost always burrowed and usually only comes out to eat. We suspect that Angel is male, but that's purely speculation.

Now onto the ones you have met before :-)

Charlie is a highly suspected female. Mel picked her up for us and housed her for a few weeks, until we could make the 8 hour drive to pick up Charlie. While she was at Mel's Exotics, Mel behaviour tested Charlie with a number of her bts'. Mel is quite confident that Charlie is female. We absolutely love Charlie, and the best part of acquiring her was meeting Mel, getting a tour of her place, and meeting her bts'!

Stormfly is another social one, s/he is out basking most of the time and watches our every move. We suspect that Stormfly is male, but once again have nothing to back that up.

Meatlug is a confirmed male, lots and lots of sperm plugs over the past 14 months!

Sasha is another highly suspected female. We paired her and Meatlug in the fall and she behaved like a female, letting him grab on and lifting her tail for him. We didn't witness any completed mating... well, there were about three seconds in January where he came very close and may have finally figured it out ;-).

So, that's our crew. We love them and can hardly wait to get some sex ids in the next few months. We are just starting up our busy gecko hatching and expo vending season as well as finishing up our homeschooling year. We are waiting until those parts of our life settle down and we can dedicate significant time to observing our meraukes.

Thank you! They are each so different and I definitely have my hopes set on some specific pairings, just hope they turn out to be the sexes I want them to be ,:-)

I am green with envy....!

They all look fantastic; good job with the acquisitions! And good luck with the introductions and the upcoming season. :D

Tcopitho, Rosie is one of my favorites too. I can't wait to see what s/he produces!

I know, Susann! It was a highlight of my year so far. Mel is so open, welcoming and full of information ... it was fantastic.

I will keep everyone updated with intros and breeding :-)
