BTS Stopped Shedding
Hello. My BTS is slightly over 2 years old. The typical shed cycle has been every 6 weeks or so, but now there has not been a shed since July. He seems healthy and is eating well at every 4-5 days. Does this mean he's full grown and will not shed as much or not at all? Any comments would be appreciated. this is my first and only BTS so I've never been through this before. Thanks, Mike

Re: BTS Stopped Shedding
It's perfectly normal for them not to shed as frequently as adults. Their fast growth rate as juveniles cause them to shed more often. Seems like the young ones are ALWAYS shedding!

Ok, thanks. Do you know how often it should be now? I like to clean the tank right after.

Re: BTS Stopped Shedding
Twice, sometimes three times per year for most of my adults. Some friends of mine who also keep BTs say once or twice per year. Mine seem to decide on shedding time right after I do a complete substrate change....
When my Northerns come out of brumation they usually shed soon after. Don't really know if there is a set rule, but once adult size has been attained it is definitely less frequent.

Re: BTS Stopped Shedding
I have 3 BTS that are 9-10 years old (Merauke) and they still shed every 6-8 weeks or so. As they reach adult size they shed less frequently, but normally much more than once or twice a year. But the frequency can be affected by a lot of things; depending on the species of skink, many are starting to see a slow down in feeding and activity due to cooler weather, and that can affect shedding.
Just enjoy it while it lasts.

Re: BTS Stopped Shedding
My Halmaheras shed quite more frequently than my five year old Northern, but they are only two years old. Don't know if that holds true for all. Most of those I asked kept Northerns, all older than mine. My Northerns also brumate for quite a while, the Halys do not. Was not really keeping track of Merauke, but will now! Thanks, Susann!

My 11-year-old sheds every few months. One time she shed and she was in the grey stage for 14 days! She is a Merauke.
