I'm looking at getting my first BTS, and I just wanted to ask a few questions before I did.

If anyone has any tips on general rules, substrate, habitat, feedings, handling, heating, the different types of BTS's, etc. I would love to hear it! I want to be ready before I bring a little one home. I love them, I think they're adorable and I've been told they're very rewarding pets.

For substrate I like to use shredded aspen, it comes in a bag with the words snake bedding on it. As far as habitat goes just have 2 hides, one on the hot end and one on the cool end. Also have a water dish and a food dish and a basking rock. Also have at least a 50 gallon tank for your BTS. For feeding just keep it varied, I feed mine all kinds of chopped up veggies, snails, dog food and eggs daily. For handling, I keep my BTS out about 30 min to an hour per day, he seems to like it. For heating try to get a basking spot around 95 or 100 degrees Fahrenheit and have the cool end at 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. My BTS is a merauke, the most common is an Indonesian. As a beginner I'd try to get a captive bred Northern or Indonesian. The more rare BTS that go for high dollars are shinglebacks, easterns and the very rare centralian going for upwards of $1000 each. A captive bred northern should run you about $200
