Tips for keeping blotchies

some of scotts line animals got spread out far and wide when the chap that origionally was breeding this form got out of blueys,colin hamilton,but colin also sold a few off years before that as well ,hanging onto his brightest specimens,so could be from those of babies colin may have sold,could also be from babies scott himself has sold over the years,but could also just as easilu be non related stock

it does look similar to uours though scott

Probably more likely to be descendants from Colin's. I can't remember selling to someone in Liverpool but then I can't remember what I had for breakfast. :-)

Colin was selling them for quite a few years. He had a few mates who were also selling animals that were either related to each other or collected prior to the NSW amnesty and introduction of licensing requirements referred to as "pre amnesty" animals.

Surprisingly there were very few in captivity and being actively bred during that period as far as I can make out. I figure that even the wild specimens from the Blue Mountains in that area have some degree of shared genetics - but I'd love to get my hands on some of Norm's hehehe from known wild stock.

Yeh Nick, I can probably tell you what sex it is from a couple of different angles. "probably" - gets a bit difficult after a few months until they get past geeky teenage phase.

80% sure that is a boy.

Ah ok sweet thanks nice to have a general idea, like with my Easterns i think one is a boy and one is a girl because one has a really narrow head compared to the other.

Nick - I refer to that orange red colour mix as salmon.

I have not had problems getting the blotchies to eat vegetables. This was one of a group of three wild blotchies living together in our backyard a number of years ago. When we fed ours we made a bit extra for these young ones.

Yeah it is similar to a salmon colour but a bit more orange i guess its hard to explain and i haven't been able to get a picture to properly represent the colour he actually is going to try using a camera tomorrow outside in the sun(if there is any sun).

one of lifes most irratating things nick,getting a good pic of blotchies that gives an accurate account of there true colors

outdoors in sunlights definatly best


one tip i have,im joping its ringing true this season,but getting awfully close to thinking my predictions are wrong,in cold climates when housed outdoors,always be mindful of the fact that some seasons it can cool right off before females have dropped babies,a fair few times ive had to bring females in because of this,one female i ended up losing because i thought she wasnt and in june she dropped mummified babies,ive had girls ive had to bring inside drop as late as may with lowlands which isnt the norm with blotchies but has happened enough to make me be wary of it

This one is a good example about camera tricks. In real life it is a nice blushing pink - looks white even with an SRL. I haven't been able to fix the problem even with playing with white balance settings in the camera etc.

Ok this is about as close as i could do it, 8MP phone camera, normal balancing and whatnot, no flash in direct sun.
I just measured and weighed him he came in at:
14/4/2015
Weight: 138Grams.
Length -
To Tail: 27cm.
To Hind Legs: 17cm.

Comparing to when i got him:
28/3/2015
Weight: 105 Grams.
Length -
To Tail: 24cm.
To Hind Legs: 16cm.

The weight is pre-food though about to feed them all now.

Edit: I am still amazed at how much of little piggies blotchies are, i know why they are but its still funny how within 5 seconds of a dish of food its at it chomping it down.

Ooh, could I piggy back here and see if you know the sex of treasure? I wasnt sure how soon you tell sex. From what I've been told she should be about 3 months old now.

Sheesh I'm a little more torn now I've seen the photos of both, but I'm going with male for both. Nick needs a money shot with an overhead view with the tail straightened out. It is very hard to tell once they chub up a bit.

Thanks Scott! Might be interesting to revisit when he has grown up. Of course, just out of interest it makes no difference to us. A treasure is a treasure regardless
