So, I though you all might enjoy this little story:
I've had a male norther BTS since May, so almost a year now. He's in a 40 breeder tank with UV, a nice flood light for heat, and aspen. Lately, likely because of a cold Illinois winter, we've been having humidity problems. His belly and arm scales started to curl. So I soaked him right away and introduced a humid hide. It's just a rubbermaid shoe box tote with a corner of the lid cut off and some repti-bark in it that I add water to once in a while. At first, he decided to explore it, but hated feeling trapped inside. He really hates being soaked in a bigger container too. So the skink-man largely ignored it for a few weeks. But now he's in shed and miserable. I happened to add some water to the humid place yesterday while he was looking and in he went. He even stayed inside. He even went to sleep in the humid hide! And this morning when I woke up, he ran from me and zipped in to his humid hide!
I think he likes it. His shed is going much better than any of his previous. But I'm kind of weirded out that he learned what it was for by watching me pour water... I'm not used to smart reptiles. All I've kept before him were snakes and a frog, and they're about as smart as rocks or goldfish.
One struggle down. Now to work on this winter fast he's on.

the einter fast is because hes a tropical animal living in a tenperate climate,if they pick up the cold outside they often go into fasting,to them its pretty much how they go about it in nature to

I'm hoping that since spring has decided to come on fast that he'll start eating this week. It went from 0 degrees last week, with an ice storm, to being in the 50s this week (in Fahrenheit).
He's decided that food is for sleeping on instead of eating. He will lay his head on the food dish and fall asleep. Then he'll walk through it and spread all his greens across the cage. I have to say, for all his strange habits, he's the most interesting little reptile I've ever had.
