What to have on hand at home in case of power outage please

Hi all-

In the northeast U.S. we are due for a blizzard starting this evening. We do have power outages during storms where I live from time to time. Could someone please provide me with what specific things I should have on hand at home that will keep my baby girl warm in the event of a power outage and how to implement them. I plan on going out today after work and gathering my needs.

All the things i can think of require some sort of power, maybe wrap you and your blueie up in a think blanket so you get really warm and then let her soak the warmth up from contact with you is the only non power thing i can think off.

That or if you are able to make a fire to heat up water to then put into one of those rubber water bottle things that people use on sore muscles.

Just please note, as it's done further down in the thread, that the heat pouches are not meant for use with animals and can heat up enough to burn, so always use caution whether you use the "HotHands" type or the animal shipping pouches.

Thanks so much. That is an excellent thread and I love your emergency packs. It's all very smart. I can never come up with things quick enough for emergencies. I just ran out and got those hot hands because I called around and cannot find 40 hour pet heaters anywhere to get them today. I have bottled water and many cans of cat food and dzoens of dubias at home and a small tank I can bring with us or I have a wooden box that I lay a towel in and usually have a hot water bottle on top of the towel and a cotton bag with towels in it where my Snowy is and we use this transport to the vet in the cold weather these days, so that is alwyas ready for her except the hot water will be a problem, so I will use the hot hands and put an extra layer of a towel or something in above the hot hands. I will use my temperature gun to determine the temperature flucs.

Hope all went well, here on western LI we did not get as much as expected, and no power outages thank God. A fully charged car battery and a power inverter can supply enough power for a while to keep a few tanks warm. Problem being you have to lug that heavy battery into your reptile room. Your local auto parts store can supply these items. (At least the one that I work in does.) During hurricane sandy these things were flying out of here, we couldn't keep enough power inverters in stock. I'm sure they can be purchased anywhere that sells tools, home supplies, etc. Good to have around just in case, can always buy a battery but the inverters disappear at times like these!

Just doing some checking, and the old school way of converting power is no longer necessary with some of the inverters on the market today. If you are willing to spend a bit more money, they can be purchased already containing a rechargeable battery, with multiple outlets and high output. I live in an apartment or I would have a generator that could power Texas.
Going to look into these!

I made it and did not lose power thank goodness. I will be more prepared the next time there is a forecast for a big storm. We ended up with 3 feet where I am in central Massachusetts.

We dodged a bullet (Western Long Island) but my friends further east got close to your amount! Lots more winter left for us in the Northeast, hopefully our precious pets will be able to stay warm. It is my only worry during storms. I can put on a jacket or go out and sit in my truck with the heat on. My reptiles are at the mercy of the Gods, and I live for the day I can retire in Florida. We are expecting more sunday night and my guts are already in a twist. Did you have to name her Snowy?? LOL best of luck!

I keep a stock of the same warming packs used for keeping them warm during shipping just in case. Back when I was a teenager before I had a bluey I had a bearded dragon that I had to keep in my girlfriends parents bathroom for a week due to a massive ice storm that knocked most of the areas power out for days.
