Substrate for a problem skink?

Postby Alexis_M » Tue Dec 16, 2014 7:43 am

Hi! My bluey baby recently was diagnosed with Mouth Rot. He's been on antibiotics for a week and I just picked up another weeks worth from the vet yesterday. I talked to the vet about getting a cream to help heal the sides of his mouth, and he suggested dabbing diluted Providone iodine on the corners of his mouth once a day. Does anyone know how I'd go about diluting it? Will it say on the bottle? Is there something else that may be better to use?
Also I have him on paper towels and shredded cloth for now, which was suggested to me by someone else with a skink who has mouth rot. Does that sound good for now? I'll go out to the store tonight to get a whole bunch of fake plants to give him more hiding room. I also put a few layers of paper towel down in one corner by his basking rock and put a UTH under the to help raise the temp on the warm side..
When his mouth heals up I want to take him off of the shaved Aspen and put him on something better. I won't be putting him on the new substrate until he's completely healed, but until then I'm looking for suggestions on what I could keep him on. He loves to burrow so I need something that he get get under and it won't get stuck in his eyes. He doesn't have front nails either due to his previous home so I'd prefer something easy for him to dig in to. Thanks for the help!! :D

What type of BTS is he? How long have you had him? Was this your first visit with this vet?
I'm asking because there is a certain illness that can affect the gigas species that sometimes gets misdiagnosed as mouth rot but often involves digits/feet and eyes as well as the mouth. In that case antibiotics rarely do much, if anything, to improve the condition but is often due to humidity being much too low.
If we could see pictures of your skink we may be able to tell you if it looks like this may be the case.

Otherwise as to your question, I might suggest you call the vet's office to see how far he wants you to dilute the iodine, but generally for reptiles I believe you dilute it 10 parts water to 1 part iodine.

Here's a somewhat recent thread where I talked about what could be done if it is this other condition, but please don't be discouraged by the title and beginning of the thread, just keep reading ;)

He's an Irian Jaya.
I've had him since May 10, 2014.
He's always had slight redness on the corners of his mouth and I figured it was just scars or something because he was not cared for well in his previous home. his eyes started to water(not crust) and his saliva was thick(but still clear).
Yep, my first visit was last week and I called to say his mouth wasn't completely healed and they put him on another week of antibiotics.
I looked through the thread. His mouth isn't yellow, and nothing is crusty at all. Also he hasn't had any twitching at all. He acts really normal, actually. Basking, eating, drinking, attitude, everything is still the same. I can see how my humidity would be down, as he's only on Aspen. I kind of figured since he has no trouble shedding, his humidity must be fine. I'm going to try and figure out how to add pics now. Sorry, I'm a bit new!!

The one with my flash on was what he looked like at his worst. I have noticed a great change in the last week while on the antibiotics. If he doesn't heal up at this week I'll be taking him back to the vet.

The scales around his eyes look like he may have had some bouts of, what I've started calling, the Mystery Illness. But they look good now.
I've never dealt with mouth rot so I'm not able to identify that, but that looks like a pretty healthy mouth to me ...maybe a little redness around the corners, but I'm not seeing anything looking like an infection. Again, I have no idea what mouth rot looks like, so take that for what it's worth.

I bet he may do better if you can get the humidity in the air up, without soaking his substrate constantly --which is hard to do without some kind of humidifier that puts out a fine mist rather than spraying the substrate down to get the air humidity up. If that makes sense.

Okay! He's still on paper towels and shredded cloth right now. What do you suggest I change to? I'm really worried to get a loose substrate and then have it get stuck in his mouth.
Yeah, that makes sense (: do you have a certain humidifier that you find to work well, or will anything work?

Any humidifier will be an improvement ;) but I personally use a MistKing. With 12 tanks to keep humidified atm in the dry desert climate of UT, the cost of the MistKing is definitely worth it. It is the only type of humidifier I've ever used though, other than just spraying with a bottle...
Any of the "barkier", "mulchier" substrates should hold moisture better than aspen, it's just a matter of preference and what works in your particular circumstances; many mix up their own stuff by mixing different substrates and even adding moss or even sand or dirt.

Hi
Does not look like mouth rot to me, dealt with it years ago when everything was imported, and I felt I had to rescue them all....Had a water dragon, iguana and more than one snake that had issues with it and there was a cheesy yellowish substance in the mouth along with redness, dark patches and some swelling. Really disgusting. Unless this is a really mild case it seems like just a bit of irritation, but doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it and keep your vet on call.

Forgot to add, I use bark for my Gigas, and never had issues with it.

I am going to get the humidifier today and I bought Cypress mulch last night. If for some reason doesn't work with him, I'll go get something barkier. Thanks for the help!!

Well he spent all night scratching at the screen and running around. No digging, and I even made some holes in the cypress mulch to help him out. When I woke up this morning he had dirt all in the sides of his mouth and in one eye. I think I'll take it out and put him back on to paper towels and cloth until I go get something barkier. Maybe reptile bark?
