So sorry Susan! This happened with Calypso last season also, between 1-2 weeks after she delivered 4 stillborns, it was so heartbreaking She had also delivered a very large slug before the stillborns, so I think this is what caused the issue. I think after pushing out the 1st 11 healthy & 1 still born, she just wasn't strong enough to get the Big slug out right then and the delay caused the others to be stillborn. Just a theory, I can never know for sure.

Stacey that's what I assumed last year, because the last thing she birthed after 4 hours of pushing was a set of "twins" --two babies in the same sac, plus one of them, though small, was folded in half sideways-- so when the still born came almost a week later, I figured it was something like what you described.
This time I didn't think there was anything out of the ordinary, but I can't say for sure since I wasn't home for the birth of the last 3 babies; I came home to her birthing another slug (small) then she went to sleep, and that was that. Until yesterday.

I do not know for sure that the babies were stillborn since I didn't see either one come out, but I choose to believe that they were

Bluish! I'm so sorry, I've forgotten to answer your question!
I wait at least until after the first shed (what I call "real" shed, as they pretty much come out sloughing a first, shed-like layer) to get a feel for who may show some pretty colors later on, but it can take several months before you start to see the colors they will be. I've had some that have been fairly colorful from the get-go, and some that have taken close to a year to fully color up.

Sorry, it's been a while since I did an update, but here it comes:
Did their 3 week weigh and measure yesterday, and gave everyone a bath today since it's looking like everyone is getting close to shedding (Bowser is the only one who's shed so far; he is so cute!) and snapped photos while they were in the tub.
(To those of you who are new to skinks: no, they don't need to have baths every time they shed. I've just had little babies lose toes in, what seems like, the blink of an eye because of their teeny-tiny toes and the low humidity in my area.)

The ones I'm leaning towards maybe keeping
(although, I will most likely only pick one, maybe two at the most!):
Peach --has shown the most color
Bowser --love the thin stripes
Luigi --second place after Peach in coloring. Neither Luigi or Peach have shed yet, but I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.

The ones I think maybe show the most male traits:
(I really shouldn't do this, because it is almost impossible to say at this age as they all look nearly identical in shape, so please don't put too much weight on my guesses at this point. I'm doing it because of a slight case of irony. I have 3 males already, which is about one more than I'd like to have, so I do not need any more males. So please compare these names to the ones I'm considering maybe keeping:)

Baby who huffs the most:
Yoshi --not really saying much because it rarely happens, but IF there's a huff, it's usually Yoshi

Flightiest baby:
Daisy --again, not really saying much because it rarely happens, but IF I have to chase someone down, it's usually Daisy

Mario --not saying much either because all of them are super inquisitive and sweet

That was Peach. It usually shows up in pictures, but not so much in person.

They really are gorgeous babies. You should keep them all and breed. You could have quite a business going with those colors and patterns. Mama did a great job.

I think the issue with trying to keep them all is the cost (enclosure, food, etc), space and the difficulty with determining what sex the little babies are. If she kept all of them and then found out later that they were all males, that would do her no good as far as breeding goes.

Yeah. I know. It was really mostly a joke because that's how I feel every time we have a litter. I have kept one here and there but cost and space really do make it difficult to expand too much. I have to be careful, though, because i love them so much, i could easily end up like one of those people on Animal Hoarders.
