New Tank Photos

Postby Sebastian » Fri Feb 07, 2014 7:39 pm

So last weekend the glass finally arrived for the new custom tank i've been building for Gideon. It's 45" x 20" x 18", made of melamine. I really really love how it turned out. Right now it's just a really bland set-up, I will be making him a customized interior once i'm done this semester of Uni.

I like your cage, lots of room in there!

I was wondering what are you using as a basking surface under his heat lamp? I'm going to need my guy new tiles/rocks/whatever and I like the look of the black... thanks!

Good job.

I like the front opening so the skinks can see your hand coming towards them rather than from above. The only comment is that heat lamp suspended from its wiring makes me a little nervous.

Poor Gideon thought my hand coming towards him was the scariest thing in the world the first few times lol! He was so used to being picked up from above he kept flinching every time I reached in x) He's calmed down about it now though, this morning I woke up to watch his head poking up from the litter guard as he checked it out, it was cute.

As for the lamp, it's not pretty but it works and is safe (atleast it held up during some intense tugging and swinging tests), the mesh is tightly pinched around the lip of the lamp and the wires that come down are pinched and twisted shut for redundancy, then they come up and wrap around a stick for about four feet of wire per side. Checking it is part of my daily cleanup as well.

Despite all of that it's not very pretty and it does have the potential to fail, right now i'm trying to figure out how to alter it, right now the only option is to hanging it with all the pressure on the wire, which I do not want to do and lacing wire through the holes at the top of the dome has proven a bad idea in the past. In any case this is just a temporary solution till I get creative enough to solve the issue. I hope that puts your mind at ease a bit :)

One option I may do is once he's fully grown i'll be doing a custom interior with a raised basking platform, at that time I will probably cut a large hole and simply place the lamp ontop like the uvb light is placed which would eliminate all my problems.

I'm open to any suggestions anyone may have regarding the lamp as it is now though!

Personally, I went with a simple DIY approach. I purchased a ceramic light fixture from the hardware store, along with some wire and a plug, and installed it into the top of each tank.

That turned out really awesome Fatal! I'm not sure if i'm handy enough to do that... i've never done wiring, ever! But it certainly looks good... and then I could move that dome to my crested's cage............ hmmmmmmmmmm  look what you've done, aha!

I'd never done wiring either. Notice that I did it wrong at first (no marettes), and had to go back and re-do the wiring.

It's really very easy. You can even skip the wire/plug part by buying an extension cord, cutting off the female end, and wiring that to the fixture. Use marettes :) You've already got a hole in the top where the wires can come through.
