Unique Tanimbar.. maybe?

Postby Dakota » Wed Feb 05, 2014 1:50 pm

Another thread about Tanimbars. :blah:

Okay, Austin's thread has opened my eyes. He posted a what most would classify as an IJ, and got ID'd by Ray as a Tanimbar. Austin said that Ray said that Tanimbars used to come in various colors and patterns -- which apparently no one sees anymore.

When I inquired about London, and got pictures, he appeared to be an IJ with more scincoides influences. He also appeared to be chubby in the photo. But when he got to me, he wasn't chubby at all. It was muscle.. not even kidding. I previously owned an IJ for like 4 years, and he was so much different than than her.. the way he felt was so different. Holding Thiswai wasn't much different than holding my Meraukes or Halmaheras.. but London felt like holding an IJ on steroids. He has a very, very tiny tail (I mean TINY), he is also small at 20". He has more body than tail. He has only like two colors on him. Silver and brown. His front arms, head, and body base color is silver, but his thin striping is brown. He has a bit of gold dusting running down the spine, and his belly has thin orange stripings.. but nothing significant. I was looking in the blue bible, and it said that Tanimbars usually have fewer than 5 scales between the upper lip and interparietal*, and Merauke/IJ'S are supposed to have 5. London has 4. Remember that thread I started, wondering about his scalation.. since it wasn't fitting IJ's? He is also very shiny, compared to my Meraukes. He does have thick scalation, but that depends on how he was raised from a bub.

But stating similarities, here are some differences. He isn't mean toward humans, although he has a hate for other skinks. He doesn't pee when being held, although sometimes he struggles.

What do you think? I'm going to call Ray Friday sometime and ask what he think. I just don't think he is an IJ. That is why I decided against breeding him, just because he didn't seem IJ.

When you actually thin of it, I cannot see anything other than Tanimbar.. just an odd patterned Tanimbar. Also his colors were a bit caramelized in the photo.

I'm on the fence about it.. his colors deter Tanimbar as choice, but everything else is a Tanny trait. Glossy-ness, small size, scalation, etc..

Ah, could have swore some Tanny blood was in there. Must just have excessive testosterone to account for muscle mass..

What about the striped belly? As far as I know that is a scincoides trait right? Maybe some Northern on down his line..

ij to me as well. very certain its not tanny in any case, but i am not good with Ij's, meraukes and indos in general.

im hoping someone who knows tannies will help me fill in information here....

for some reason i find the line between IJ and tannie to be very visible, although i cannot point out immediately what makes me see it that way.
scale type (not the thickness, but the way it shines in the light) and colour is kinda what i look for, rather than the actual pattern at first. Some tannies have very wild, undefined patterns, others have a little more band pattern visible. They kinda look like nice curry and rice most of the time to me, with their pattern and colours i mean :D
the brown tannie too has very filled in brown patterns.

borrowing photos from this forum, from a french website called tiliqua.wifeo and from andrew seike and Mel's exotics:

pretty brown tannie:
Image

pretty silver tannie
Image

pretty yellow tannies from germany.
Image

pretty seike tannies with more wild patterns, i am more used to seeing these on photos when i look for them, though silvers ive seen look like in the first photo most of the time.
Image

and finally, with some skink from the same bloodlines as seikes i believe, are mels tannies. they have a lot of amazing variety, with both more defined and more wild pattern:
http://melsexotics.com/me-collection/bl ... imbar-bts/

Many skinks have more defined muscles, not sure about the gigas species but my Litchie is a macho northern skinkman. Pomme is like holding something that loves taking it easy but doesnt really wanna be held :)
its not like im a tanny expert or anything, i just felt like adding what i think alongside other peoples photos, cause i believe IJ's and tannies are very far from eachother.....i may still be very wrong.

im hoping the real tanny masters wll fill in what i have failed to express.....

EDIT: tannies are on my to buy list, apart from more female northerns. Just some general information :D

Good post Linnea. I usually know a Tanny when I see one, well.. the classic looking one anyways. But when I heard there were ones that stretched outside of the classic, I challenged the fact.. but I just he will still be labeled as an "IJ", although I think he has something else going on in him..

Not that it matters, I still do not feel comfortable breeding him to anything..

Although that first one looks a lot like him.. just the band color is more of a chocolate brown to him.

I also see no signs of Tanimbar. From the picture you have provided, he's not nearly as glossy or smooth scaled as a Tanny.

Image just in case anyone was wondering.

distance /ocean gap from the coast line of indonesia to tanimbar island would roughly be about 400-500 miles giver or take. now i'm no skink expert, but to me that looks like no tanimbar i have ever seen, or interacted with. only ones i have seen in person are austins and literally watched the yellow one try to eat his hand as he tried showing it to me, pure evil. now i'll say the kei islands and tanimbars because of proximity would have a higher probability of similar appearances.

i don't know the history of your animal, so it isn't fair to say if it is or isn't at least on my behalf. i don't know *my stars!.. just saying more than likely not a tanimbar.
