my first skink..Mordecai

Postby theDregs » Wed Oct 02, 2013 11:51 am

My son (9) has been saving for a lizard for months. His has wanted a BTS for ever but had faced the realization that one was pretty much out of his financial reach. He had decided on a crestie instead.

Turns out that someone in my local area was selling en entire setup for 75 dollars! It included everything except the UVB bulb for the fixture. I checked the little guy out. Seems to be perfectly healthy..alert, docile, eating, has all it's finger and toe tips, etc. I think, according to research here, that it is an Indonesian?

It has been eating dog food with pureed fruits and veggies. I plan to keep it on the same diet ( i'll probably just cut up the fruit instead of pureeing it, though), with the addition of dubia and superworms, since I already feed those to my tegu.

What do you guys think? Oh, he's actually a light grey, though the picture makes him look pinkish. And "he" may very well be a "she".

Hello and welcome :D
really cute merauke! (i think, but im rather certain)

id cut out the fruit from the meals and only feed it as a treat, it is a lot of sugar to a small lizard ;)

also, dont forget to take a look at the food chart for ideas on what to mix into the food. i was the worst at vegetables before i got my skinks, but now i can make several interesting meals that, without the dog food, is appreciated by homo sapiens as well!
http://bluetongueskinks.net/foodchart.html

not pureeing is a good idea. purees are very soft, they need to bite a little and use their jaws too, even if they dont chew :) but cut the veggies to small pieces nevertheless.

Merauke for sure. Congrats! Good looking fella. Impossible to tell sex from that picture, but if you put a gun to my head, I might through out the guess of ...male.

It is odd that he hasn't said anything... at the very least I expected him to try to convince everyone that its a IJ....

He is probably still in the crypt waiting for the light to pass.

Thanks! I thought he looked like a Merauke, but I didn't want to get fancy. He is currently burried ynder a pile of aspen shavings. We decided to leave him alone for a day or two, since he peed on both of us.

Hopefully he becomes tame enough to hang out in the living room with us, like the tegu.

That is a beautiful skink, wow :)

Pretty sure ML and Dakota are going to show up and start a bidding war. You might want to erase any reference to what state (even country) you live in...

He should tame down very nicely after some time to settle in.

Fatal, that's some solid advice.

Dakota's too busy leafing through the bible and trying to zoom in on that picture to count the scales. He has no time to post!

Hey, people have to get their beauty sleep every once in a while.

Yes, definitely a Merauke, I LOVE the grey-ish tones, as well. If I had to guess form the photo, I think male.

Oh my goodness. Soak it up people. He just admitted that a Merauke is a merauke, not the product of some awful act between five ij's and a merauke. "Its a IJ x merauke IJ x IJ x IJx IJ that just happens to look like a merauke! You can tell by all the scale shaped circles that I drew all over its face! See?!" sorry Dakota... you've been gone a while and I had no one to pick on 8)
