Habanero the Fire Skink

Habanero is a 2ish year old fire skink. He was my "reward" for completing my PhD candidacy exams. He is not hand tame but he does allow us to hand feed him and pet him. He enjoys food, going swimming, and more food. He can actually fly given the right food incentive. He eats dubia roaches and snails. I tried to feed him dogfood but he didn't seem to interested. He is rather hilarious.

I love the name, perfect. Fire skinks are so interesting. They shed underwater, don't they? And they are oviparous? Such a fascinating skink!

Habs swims a lot, especially when he is shedding but I have found scales all over his enclosure. And yes, they are oviparous. I'm about 95% sure he is male. Their sexual dimorphism is a lot more noticeable than other skinks. I have toyed with the idea of getting a few females and starting a breeding colony when I'm out of grad school. They are just so much fun to watch. When he gets his food, he always runs away with it. He does what my husband calls "little skinky burnouts".

I love these guys, so pretty. I wanted one for a while, but could only find wild caught ones. ;( I will have to buy one from you if you do start breeding them though!

Are you offering him uvb? I'm curious to see if they really have the high UV requirements that are stated in most care sheets. I've had a few and always supplied them with UV but I'm curious to see if anyone has had luck without
