Re: Apple Snail Farm.
I have 2 mystery/apple snails in my 30 gal tank (pets, not food) with fish and they lay eggs CONSTANTLY. I always remove the egg sacs but if they are safe for BTS I might just let 'em hatch for treats. Plus if I get overrun, I can always turn them in for store credit at my local fish store. Awesome!

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
I switched from a 5 gallon to a 10 gallon, Kept it barebottom ( no gravel ) and put in a penguin biowheel filter. I'm pretty big into fish tanks so this was all stuff I already had. Snails were on sale at petsmart so I got 3 golden - $4.99 and 4 black - $1.00, I paid $14.99 for 6 oz. of Algae Wafers and I'm set up and running. Hopefully they are different sexes and breed.

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
Well i have been meaning to do a lil update on how this has been going so ill post a pic of a few of them. No eggs yet so im still waiting on that to happen before i start really feeding them to Indiana. So far all other than realizing that the Algae wafers i feed em can reaaaallly cloud up the water if i put too many in and leave them, but that was nothing that a few couple water changes couldnt fix. I also still havent decided what kind of fish i should put in with them. But anyway all is good and the snails seem to be thriving but and im hoping to see some eggs soon.

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
You don't really have to worry about the snails breeding since they're hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female parts. As long as you have at least two they'll breed. You'll need to lower the water level an inch or two since they lay eggs above it. For fish I wouldn't recommend any of the small tetras/minnows since they like to pick at the snails' eyestalks and other exposed parts, I've even had snails die off because of this. I should also say to avoid loaches because they like eating snails even more than blueys lol. Algae wafers are alright but you could supplement it with blanched vegetables that'll sink to the bottom, the more food is available the more likely they'll reproduce.

I breed the common garden snail, they dont need to mate to produce so you can even start out with just one. I have hundreds. Rubbermaid tub with a screen top, 6-7inches of dirt, LOTS of snails and veggies for them to eat. They lay 300-400 eggs in the dirt, and within 3 weeks you have tiny little baby snails that grow fast!

I never thought about garden snails. If this doesn't work maybe I'll try those.

Bro can you post a pic? Did you just collect them from your garden? I've never thought of that as well,

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
I would do the Garden snail route however for the life of me i cant remember ever even seeing a garden snail...anywhere...ever. I even went to a local Greenhouse and asked them about snails and they said that they dont even get them. And as it is illegal to ship snails across state lines i cant order them so i really only have the Apple snail as a possibility.

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
Nope...And my lil guy figured out what was in the large aquarium in my room so he started trying to find a way to gut up to it when i let him wander around my floor. So i gave him a couple as a treat....I told myself i wouldnt feed him any untill i saw some eggs, but he flicked his big blue tongue at me and i caved.

From my understanding it is Illegal to ship Snails across state lines. You could always go to any Greenhouses in your area and ask them if the have seen any around, or check local parks and hope you get lucky

Re: Apple Snail Farm.
Have you had any luck with your snails? We gave Azarath 2 of the snails last night. She super enjoyed them. Going to add a new snail and 2 fish today. Maybe the fish change the environment some how. Do you have any eggs yet?
