Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
Calm down people, give him a break, the animals been purchased,i dont see any signs of mbd,its eating which is great and whilst skinny, ive seen plenty in worse shape, and with care and feeding the come good.
Even With out seeing a vet, wholesalers, importers ect dont care to well for them, often over crowding them,no proper heating ect which stresses them big time,if u put them into good conditions, get them feeding well ect ect,and most importantly lower there stress they often come good
That hes eating is a great sign,id continue feeding him up,nothing wrong with the odd pinky either,to help build up his fat reserves, maybe as a treat on top of your current feeding method,if he starts gaining weight thats a great sign, wouldnt suprise me if his eyes clear up either with correct conditions

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
Good job, looks like it has improved already, with the weather warming next few months i reckon its going to pack on the weight if its eating well,if it wasnt eating, not putting on weight id be more inclined to visit a vet,if eye clears and it starts bulking up thats a good sign its doing ok just with tlc,but keep a close eye on him/her
As if under weight and there are complications they can go downhill fast with no back up fat reserves, looks like its doing well so far though so i guess stick to whats working so far and keep us posted
One plus with getting a skink up and going again is the attatchment you get, some of my faves have been skinks in similar condition that with tlc have thrived,i wish i had of taken pics of my old shingle back pr,i honestly thought they had no hope, boy was i wrong

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
There is no set weight for age scale,as some grow faster than others, also every one keeps them differently, some brumate the first winter, others dont, some just brumate even when u try not to brumate them, lol
Im not sure exactly what size yours is,looks a reasonable length for a young one though, definatly needs more weight on,but they do that pretty quick if they eat there tucker, good idea to keep weight checks on him, will show you how hes going

and to saphire tigress:
a) im new to the forum didnt no how many threads i should limit to, sorry.
b) i didnt say put salt in his eye im not stupid, what i meant was a little salt in his bath, salt water is known for its healing powers, maybe not in this case but it was just a simple question.
c) i did my recherch but it dosnt aswer every question. i went to the wholesaler and when i purchased him he was in shed, which was the problem with his eye.
I do know what im doing, i will keep fatening him up and keep on the calcium to prevent mbd. i will also puchace the mite treatment.
his color and appetite is perfect for those who care

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
Urofreak, keep up the good work. You have invested a lot of time and effort into him already and regardless of whether you have made three or four threads, your concerns are genuine, perhaps even panicked, confronted by what you are faced.
Agreed, salt in the eyes- big ouch, more than anything! Otherwise, a completely valid question. If you don't know, it's best to ask, even if to some it's a silly question. You are right, saline in wounds is good to irrigate and remove slough, but the eyes will find it an irritant. Plain water or a prescribed eye drop or eye moisturiser (similar to what you might use for dry and tired eyes yourself) will help alleviate discomfort and dissolve sticky particles in discharge.
He's looking bright enough in these last pictures already. Don't stress about whether or not he's got mbd, there appear to be no signs and with preventative measures you have already started to put in to place, he'll be better off from now on. As you learn more about him and the diet he needs, you can offer more varied foods to give him what he needs. For now, he needs the protein to aid healing and calories to build him up. Once he's stronger, you can introduce more to broaden his nutritional intake.
I'm sorry, I missed why he's having baths, but since his toes are drying, there might ot be a big need for it. I'm probably missing somthing from somewhere though
To everyone else- there is a lot of valuable advice here, but it's sadly mixed with a little "go-for-the-throat" attitude, at the OP! We've all been beginners and many of us have panicked and stressed and yes, asked silly questions! This is a sad situation with a new owner who seems to have put their whole heart into saving a very sorry looking skink. In hindsight, there is often things which could have been done differently, but the main thing is that wrong things are recognised, accepted and learned from, for the better of he animal. So please, think a little before pointing fingers.

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
Thaks i appreciate it, he had like a reoccuring crust around his eye which turned out to be a problem shed, taken care of by olive oil on his body which aided his shed. The bath helped temporairily remove the crust.

Exactly. Never make someone feel bad for asking lots of questions. Please leave the thread starting etc to the mods to comment on if necessary. Remember - we were all new once. This forum is to help new owners whether to point them in the direction of the search function, FAQ section, diet chart, or to patiently answer questions. Remember how you felt when you were new and worried and try to be patient when answering the questions.

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
i agree with everyone else he needs a vet ASAP he isnt looking good at all. it also doesnt seem like you did enough research ...personally in my opinion any person should have a vet savings for their animals BUT this could just be my opinion since i have 16pets most of which are rescues and anything bad can happen at any time...
(since september ive had 2 emergencies with my blueys and had to get them to the vet ASAP....made me feel like a bad bluey mom at first but it wasnt husbandry issues and they were treated immediately!!! so i try not to beat myself up too much about it)
...i personally dont have alot of money but i do have enough saved that if i had to i could afford to take every single one of my animals to the vet at the exact same time....could i fit them all in my car? probably not lol but i also dont ever plan on all of my animals needed vet care all at the same time but i like to prepare for the worse case senario
get him to a vet right away or get him to someone who can...sending him or taking him back to the wholesaler in my opinion would be a low blow to that little guy. i mean i know it sucks for you since you got ripped off but it isnt fair for him to get rejected in a (eww he is sick and i dont want to deal with it manner) because a wholesaler made a mistake....
i hate when animals get rejected like that....its a pet peeve of mine and its EXACTLY why i am broke.... I have taken EVERY SINGLE ONE I've come into contact with and they've all successfully been nursed back to health with proper vet care.... AND i did this all while going to school (college) full time and working three jobs (gotta feed all those mouths somehow)

Richard: MBD can NoT be diagnosed on a picture alone
All this fighting .. just a proper vet and the problem would be solved in a day
Good job by listening to hobbyists on thuis forum, we all started once and we all made mistakes.
The eye drops..I think I understand your idea, in humans you could use NaCl 0, 9% water (phyiological water)
But that wouldn't clear the problem.
Google luck, UroFreak

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
The most important thing this skink needs is for Urofeak to understand how to properly house and feed this animal, which he/she seems to be getting under control. These animals are incredibly resilient and have great healing powers IF their basic needs are met. This forum is the best place to get that information.
Everyone is jumping up and down saying it needs a vet. There isn't much a vet can do if the animals husbandry is lacking.
In my 30 years of reptile keeping a true "reptile vet" is VERY hard to find. IME many will say they treat reptiles but often give wrong outdated advice and do things that actually are detrimental to the recovery of the animal.
I've seen many wild caught animals over the years in far worse shape than that skink turn into magnificent specimens with the right care and no vet involved.

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
Spot on bluish, thats exactly my thinking, medicine is good if needed, but if the husbandry aspect isnt up to scratch no medicine will help the animal
They often come good without needing to see a vet but always good to keep an eye on them just to be safe as some do need to see a vet

Please remeber, you are a mother and most likely have a good job im 17 and woring 10 hours a week and am paying for college and a car. If he abosulutly needed a vet i would take him but like 'Katrina and RichardC' said in a clam way exaduration and everyone yelling didnt help. As you can you see he looks at least a little better

Ad thaks everyone for the comments
i will post more pics of him and his setup today and will also take care of the mites. An im a bit resistant to herp vets in my area. I went to one for my uromastyx that had some sand for lunch. When i took him i payed hundreds to help him out but the vet couldent expain the siezures he was having, which most of you would know is severe mbd do to bad pet store care. Coulda been a bad vet but none the less i payed 300$ to try and save him but he was far beyond that point. Ive since found what i feel to be a better vet

If people disagree with a diagnose, I'm always willing to listen.
Most clients are EXCELLENT hobbyist, and have always an anwer ready..but when it comes to medicine, I'm rarely wrong
The facts we know NOW are slightly different then when the hobby started, and we have still a lot to learn, Bluish.
Anyway, as I allready said in previous topics, it's hard to diagnose animals on a forum, without the good old fashion clinical exam.
I dedicated an entire year of medicine to exotic animals, instead of learning about dogs and cats, so I think I might be slightly different from the other vets here in Belgium.

Not quiet right, but I speak from my practice off course.
We have a nice fascillity with terraria and stuff to hospithalise animals which need critical care. Infusions, heat, UV, TLC, etc...

Re: Crusty/ runny eyes
In my area it is extremely rare to find a vet that has ever once laid hands on a frog. My African Bullfrog has an extremely aggressive feeding response for example. The one that I took him to when he busted his nose lunging against the tank wouldn't touch him. I even held him and his eyes were closed so he couldn't see him to bite, still wouldn't. I refused to pay the exam fee and left. Some pressure with a dry clean cloth and Neosporim without pain reliever, a little hospital tank covered all the way around and he was all better.
A friend of mine had been treating most of my reptiles for the past 3 years, nice to have house calls, but come to find out her advice on the tape debacle was wrong so I'm hesitant to use her.
IMO, if you can't afford a vet, you can't afford the animal.
Off topic I apologize.
Glad to see he's perking up. Lots of TLC and high hopes for this guy.
