Brought one of my blueys to our grand opening...pic heavy!

Postby hurricanejen » Wed Feb 20, 2013 5:39 pm

So I brought my male northern blue tongue, Bandersnatch, to the grand opening of our new Oceanside store. He's always been a hit at my usual store in Menifee, so bringing him to Oceanside was a natural thing.

Had him inside whenever it wasn't sunny out, and he was his saintly little self the entire time.
Image

Of course, not everyone loved him. This is probably one of my favorite pictures, I just die laughing each time. This kid ended up petting him, but it took a lot of persuading!
Image

He also hung out on the front counter for a big portion of both days - he is so used to being in the store that he generally just stays where I put him, making him a great little mascot. By the end of the day he was getting tired, so I'd put a hide out there for him and he'd tuck up into it and take a nap.
Image

Where was I for this? Well, for part of the afternoon I had gator duty.
Image

Bandersnatch also hung out in the tortoise petting pen when the sun was out. Aside from occasionally trying to breed with the leopard tortoises (I'm not kidding), he was a little angel, and seemed to enjoy the chance to bask too.
Image

I don't know about you guys but it makes me happy to see little girls learning to appreciate reptiles, instead of just being scared by them.

More little girls enjoying reptiles

I had my little baby retic out for the day as well, and everyone loved her - she's a sweetheart too, so it worked out well.
Image

Our sister company, the Wildlife Company, was there doing presentations all afternoon, so I got the chance to snap some cool pics of the critters they brought.

This is Steph and Milo, the kinkajou:
Image

Milo eating his grapes was probably one of the cutest and funniest things I've ever seen
Image

Jess brought Gipetto, her Weeping Capuchin monkey.

Steph with Delilah, the African Crested Porcupine

Steph and Cheeyah, the Coatimundi
Image

Steph and Cheeyah again - she's laughing because Coatis smell kind of like a weird skunk, and Cheeyah is rubbing alllllll over her
Image

Alright, I'll stop with the pictures! If you're in Southern California, you can actually have the Wildlife Company come do presentations for you too :) I'm a grown up and I know about these animals AND I've seen them all at their home...and I was still riveted by the presentation, Steph was awesome at keeping everyone's attention and she was genuinely interesting to hear speak.

And I work at http://lllreptile.com/, if you didn't know that already. Yeah, yeah, shameless plug here at the end, but I'm pretty proud of what I do because outreach like this is a huge part of my job. :) I'll be taking over our breeding program of indo blue tongues as well, so that's exciting. I'll keep you guys posted, but for now I just wanted to share my awesome weekend at work. :P

Thanks for looking!

Why do you keep advertising LLL?!?!
J/K
LLL is IMO the best large scale company out there. My aunt(who is terrified of all herps and bugs) went to one of your stores and held a blue eyed leucistic ball python. She said she was going to buy it for me but didn't know if I wanted it or not

Wow, that is awesome! I wish I could have been down there to see that. Or if a store was opened up here in Canada :)

My opinion of LLL is changing simply based on the BOI reviews that are going from darned awful to not too bad (for a large company).
I think its pretty cool that all those different animals were there.

I bet that was really cool for the kids that day. Those wild creatures from the sister company was quite a presentation I can tell. I bet the Coatimundi would eat a BTS. Good it was not able to see yours. I am thinking it is a predator. Your Northern looks fantastic. Great picture of you with that Alligator. Who buys a gator besides zoo's anyway? I cannot imagine housing one!!

Thanks all!

The Wildlife Company was really great :) The coati is related to a racoon, so they are predators but they're not too bad. All the animals being used by the Wildlife Company were restrained or under complete control, so even if they had seen the bluey, I doubt it would have been an issue. They could see the retic on my neck and as long as I kept a respectable distance they were fine. All the animals used are well trained animals accustomed to being used for presentations.

Gators are illegal to sell and keep in the state of California due to their size, but the Wildlife Company is technically a small zoo, and their permits allow them to have gators for these kinds of presentations. :)

Thanks again everyone!

Those are some AMAZING pictures. I was actually bummed out when they ended. Your BTS is so well-behaved it's sickening! I wish we had a place like this up in Canada around my parts!

Every weekend for the past two years when he hasn't been brumating, he's been at the store, so he is REALLY used to the goings-on by now...

He's also my darling favorite child <3 He's the skink that started it all for me, and he is pretty much a saint in scales.
