Update on Chewy's Enclosure and more.

Postby saisaac » Fri Jan 25, 2013 5:34 pm

Hello all,

Today I stopped by Premier Brick and Stone to get some prices on flat stones for our yard. They told me to take a couple of pieces as samples. So after showing my wife what they look like in the yard I decided to scrub them up and put them to use in the skink tank. I have been tinkering around with the skink tank a lot lately trying to get everything just right. Chewy seems to love exploring the tank each time I renovate it so that has only made my obsessive rearranging worse. Every time I mess with it he (sex is unknown) spends the next few days pretending it is a new world.

My wife almost convinced me that the geckos needed to go in order to make room. Low and behold we still have the geckos  . I have not made any substantial changes to the gecko tanks, but the plants have growing pretty well until recently. I think I may need to fertilized. Does anyone have a recommendation for fertilizing a terrarium safely? I would guess any organic fertilizer for vegetable would be fairly safe, but I am not sure. I was also wondering if anyone else has had issues with their populations of pill bugs and worms disappearing on them. I think my geckos devoured my colony which is rather obnoxious considering that in the past they have completely shunned crickets. Oh well, if they enjoy them I will just keep tossing some fresh ones in from time to time.

They are lovely enclosures. They make me want to be a skink and live in one

All your animals look spoilt. Your dogs look as blissed out as my cats do after a good feed and a tummy rub. Happy and content to just exist in your presence. It's always nice seeing animals seeming to be so happy in their human abodes.

Everyone looks so happy and healthy and just gorgeous :D I just love all your enclosures.

In regards to pill bugs, remember not to add fresh-caught ones. Only 3rd gen and higher should go into tanks with insect-eaters. Pill bugs are really good at holding heavy metals and other nasties.

Thank you guys for all your kind responses. I am still not thrilled with the substrate. I am using aspen mixed with Reptibark. I really would like to find something that is less dusty. Has anyone here used a soil mix for BTS? I know loam (sand/clay/topsoil) mix is used in Germany for Bearded Dragons quite regularly. It does not seem to have caught on here in the US though.

Yes, my pups are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Mel (Blenheim) is going to be 3 next month. Lanie (Black and Tan) turned 2 in September. Both are spoiled rotten :D

Fatal_S. I did not know that about pill bugs. I will definitely not put any more in unless I can guarantee they are safe.

I had no idea either about pill bugs. I occasionally would give them to my tree frog when coming across them in our pesticide free garden. Good to know (:

I wouldn't know either if my g/f hadn't been planning to use them in her garg tank as a cleaning crew. I've in fact used them in my monkey tail tank for that reason - I had many generations bred there and I tossed them out into the garden before learning about how great they can be. Now I have to start all over in catching wild ones and breeding them.

Apparently scientists use them to test for heavy metals. Many gecko keepers I know use them in the tanks as cleaners & feeders. They're the ones I've been asking about breeding them for a few generations before using them. Really neat little bugs :)
