Oh my. Last night Gucci Mane had me in tears.
Sometimes I offer him a bit of a treat between meals. Small bit of fruit, piece of vegetable, insect, whatever. Last night he seemed pretty lazy so I offered him a freeze-dried cricket. He has started to come out of his hiding area when the door on the cage slides open, and there he was immediately excited and ran for the treat.
He chomped the cricket and managed to knock its head off and into the substrate. As soon as he had swallowed he could smell there was more to eat, but he couldn’t see it. He started vigorously digging with his snout as he sniffed around, but he was not finding it. I picked it up and put it in plain sight on a rock, and he ran up past it and couldn’t find it.
This repeated a few times—showing him the cricket head, putting it down, his attempt to find it that resulted in it getting knocked away, and an empty mouth. When he couldn’t track it down he was smelling and looking around everywhere. He was getting extremely worked up. By try 4 of placing the piece he had drool bubbling along both sides of his mouth. It was so ridiculous and excessive that as he was scurrying around next to his house, he brushed his mouth on the wall of his house and managed to leave a trail of lizard drool all over it (it was stringy and got all over him as well).
Couldn’t keep myself from laughing at that point, which led to him running around, knocking over a water dish, and going back to try and find that one tiny piece of cricket… I haven’t found an animal that funny in a long time.
Oh, and he still loves his thermometer.
