Need I worry?

I use Zilla Jungle mix substrate and when I put some boiled pork in his food bowl he managed to get two pieces at once and did his head rub thing on the substrate and got substrate on the meat. I didn't noticed any LARGE pieces on his meat though. Here is a picture.

I would use a different substrate. I started off with repti bark, it was too dusty. Then i used carefresh, it was too dry. Now i use cypress mulch and it's perfect. Ziggy loves it too.

I've watched Coomassie eat after throwing his food in his substrate. He manages to spit a lot of the substrate out. I use Cyprus mulch these days. If you are really concerned about your guy eating substrate, you can always take him out of his enclosure to eat. I have Coomassie in a front opening enclosure so I just put his dish on the floor out side his tank and he walks out to eat it.

IMO no. I've seen my skink eat food with substrate stuck on it. He removes the large pieces though.

I recommend not feeding in the cage to prevent this, or breaking his food into tiny pieces like I have to do with my tegu who refuses to be held right now so that when he eats its bite sized and i dont have to worry about him getting substrate on it from dragging it away or having to rub his head if you cant touch yours

A very large dinner plate could help you. This could give your skink tons of feeding room to shake its head a avoid dropping sticky food on the substrate
