QUICK HELP!! ROACH COLONY PRICE GOOD?

As I've been pointing out, save some $ and worry by ditching heat tape and using heat cable instead. Heat tape is designed to get really hot. You NEED a thermo-control with it. Heat cable is designed to get warm, so therm-control isn't needed (control how warm an area is by moving the lines of cable closer together/farther apart). If you have heat tape with a thermo and the thermo fails, you risk burns and fires. I just can not see the sense in buying something designed to get very hot when all you need is something warm. Heat tape just seems too risky to me.

Yea I keep getting so confused because I keep trying to read what is safe and what isn't then get people telling me opposite things..

Heat cable it is then. Does anyone sell short ones that are less than 10 feet long? I've only seen really long ones.

There are different sizes. The cable is long because you loop it back and forth and tape it to the tank/bin. So a 10ft cable could heat a 1x1 area really warm, or a 2x2 area warm, etc.

if the room u keep animals in isnt to cool or to hot,u could just leave them in the room with out the need to heat,or if heat is needed sit tub ontop of a reptile cage to get heat from the cage under neath,eg the roof will get a decent warm spot around the basking lights

Shipping was only $6, so $31 total! Definitely was happy to find that deal!

Now to just see if I can find a good amount of Dubia's at the upcoming NY expo, or if the ones I found online are still a better. Price (I was looking at some 1" and Up for
100 $28, 200 $47, or 300 $65 with free shipping, does that seem a better price than what I might find at an expo? it seems cheaper than any other sites I've seen)

I was thinking of doing that when I get the 7x3x3' tank built for my Tegu. (putting them on top) I'm going to have a 160w bulb inside and a wooden top, so you think that will go through well enough? For now if I can find some really short heat cable I'll have to go with that though.

IME room temperature is just fine for dubias-they do breed faster if kept somewhat warm-don't cook them though.

I've warmed quite a few roach colonies by putting them ontop of a 96 watt Compact Flourescent light fixture I had ontop of my aquarium. But compare to the reptile heat lights that runs very cool-maybe about 100 or so when its on. Be careful doing this with heat sources that get hotter as it could pose a serious hazard.

Tegus need a 8x4x4ft cage

I'm home all the time and the Tegu will be out of the cage as much as it wants to be. I don't have the space for a larger cage right now, but considering it will only be in there when we are sleeping and allowed out the rest of the day and night to roam the apartment (with supervision as well as being outside when weather permits) I don't think it will be a problem and have been told such by many Tegu owners. He will be out of the cage as long as he is wanting to come out and allowed out until he wants to go back or if I have to go to sleep. Whenever my skink isn't hiding or all burrowed he is out roaming, laying in the sun coming through the screen of the open glass door, allowed to go outside if he walks towards the door (obviously with me right by his side the whole time) sits with me on the couch and cuddles into a blanket, walks around, or just watches tv or the computer with me. He's out the majority of the day and night hours a day so I think since the tegu will only be using his cage as a bed at night basically, with the whole apartment as where he usually will be hanging out and roaming, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have all of my pets out hours a day, some at my parents house like the Macaws don't even have doors on their cages and are never kept confined. I don't think that a 1 foot smaller cage will be such a big deal to a lizard who is only sleeping in it.
