Cage Stacks

Postby joshtrout » Fri Apr 06, 2012 10:58 pm

So it seems like from some of the responses I got with my introduction, BTS are addictive. So let me pick your brains. Can you please post pics of what your cage stacks look like? Since I'm a snake guy, I like expanded PVC cages, I understand most of you keep your BTS in glass caging. How are you stacking these? I do like professional looking caging systems if that means anything. Looking forward to seeing some stacks. Thanks.

I also use PVC. I get all mine from http://www.cornelsworld.com/ Love them!

I'd definitely go with PVC for blueys as well. Lighter, looks better, easy to clean... I'm sure what you use for your bloods would probably work well for blueys, the only different thing I did was get the heat bulb instead of heat tape.

My Jungle carpet python is in a powerhouse display too.

How have yours been? I have had many issues with mine, it's been replaced once, and locks replaced once too, terrible for holding high humidity too.

But I think mine was an older version too.

I use high impact polystyrene tanks. Coomassie's tank isn't actually in a stack but we have all of our gecko tanks stacked. I can't seem to find a picture right now but here is a link to the supplier of our tanks: http://pmherps.com/racks.html

Front opening is definitely the way to go if you are going to stack them. Other than size requirements, a BTS won't require anything different from an enclosure than your snakes do. Lighting is a separate issue, and blueys do need light in order to thrive unlike some snakes, but other than that, if it works for a snake, you should be able to make it work for a BTS.

Yeah, for some reason I thought I read that these guys liked to be housed in all glass cages, which doesn't seem to be the case. I like that. I find PVC cages to be superior to glass cages. I do believe they will need to be a little taller than my snake cages though, because of the use of lights. My bloods are in 12" tall cages. Just lets me control heat and humidity a little better which is important to Blood Pythons. Thanks for all the replies.

I have no complaints with my tanks. All the locks work great, they seem to hold humidity alright with a good substrate (while still having good airflow, I'd be more scared of not-enough-airflow than too much). The center of the tanks did bow when I put heavy rocks in the tanks, but now that I've dumped the rocks the tanks are functioning great again (some of the bottom ones wouldn't close totally with the rocks).

I have other smaller PVC tanks, and they may be the PHD older models. The locks aren't as good and there isn't enough airflow. I can't wait to replace them with more big 4x2s. The only thing I'd like to see in the newer tanks is a higher substrate dam so I don't get as much spilling when I open the tanks.

That's cool :)

I ran into most of my issues when I had high humidity levels, the metal started to rust. and the locks stuck, and had to be broken off :(
I fixed this by coating the locks with a thin layer of vegetable oil now, so far so good lol.

Low humidity, it seems to be much better.

Those are very nice enclosures Katrina and Fatal !!

@ Fatal S, What substrate are you using now? Also, I've been eyeing those powerhouse displays because of their sale prices and I wanted to get 5 of them...how much was the shipping??

Teeger, I got my parents to deal with the shipping (they work for a big courier company) so I can't say what the shipping would have been. I'm planning to get another 10 this summer, so maybe we can split shipping. Right now I'm using coconut-husk substrate. I was using aspen before but it was very dry in my house. The coconut mulch I'm using is MiracleMulch (from RONA, $7 for a wheelbarrow's worth).
