Reptile probiotics?

Postby critterguy » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:41 pm

Figured I would split this off from another thread.

Anyone with any peer reviewed or veterinary data on the efficacy(or lack thereof) or reptile probiotics? My first impression is that they are simply human bacteria repackaged and sold to unwitting reptile owners.

This company used to sell Nutribac df however, it appears they have started formulating their own probiotic. http://reptileuv.com/reptile-uv-probiot ... ptiles.php

They are typically we sought out for their lighting and the research they have put behind it, so I would not dismiss their knowledge on probiotics or their product. Im sure it would be top quality as well.

I have personally used the Nutribac df http://www.mzrproducts.com/index.htm . Did it work? I have no idea, But I woudl never be afraid to get it again if I had a problem just to see if it would work.

Over on the bearded dragon web site I've been going to for years, they swear by soy yogurt to help restore good gut bacteria after meds. Some people choose to buy something like this instead http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Acid.html but the yogurt seems easier and many dragons actually like it.

Is there any data available on the natural flora of reptiles? I would imagine that would have a lot to do with it. I give my leopard tortoise this supplement (http://www.carolinapetsupply.com/catalo ... cts_id=261) with the probiotics but I don't know if helps at all. I also don't know what probiotics they are using.
