Re: Question BTS behavior
you can't always tell using that method. if they are both males they will definitely not try to mate. but if one is male and one is female they may fight or may try and mate.

Re: Question BTS behavior
It is possible that males may try to mate with other males, it's happened before.
Also, while I'm not sure if reptile keeping is much different in Japan, putting a new reptile with an old one is not the greatest idea. New reptiles should be quarantined for some time to prevent disease and parasite transfer to your current reptiles.

Re: Question BTS behavior
Did you put them together to see if they tried to mate and determine sex? What was your reasoning for this? Sometimes some members can guess at sex if you post an arial view of the skink. Also, I second the quarantine suggestion Fatal has brought up. You wouldnt want your new skink to be carrying anything your old skink could catch. This way you can monitor your new one over a length of time and then you can be certain it is healthy!

Re: Question BTS behavior
I offer free fecal exams for forum members and I can assure you, many CB and CBB animals test positive for parasites. ANY new animal, IMO, should be examined for parasites.
Also, Id love to see better pictures of the "female" The male appears to be an IJ, but the "female" looks very Tanimbar to me, but with the last half of her body covered, I cant be sure.

I dont like seeing the bite wounds, blood and scales off of the little one at all. And that big one was still biting in the pic and you were snapping pictures! I hope you didnt let that continue very long.

i have to agree on the lower bts, the more yellow one, being a tanimbar island blue tongue skink, and the top one is not.

Re: Question BTS behavior
The male trying to mate is an IJ, the "female" (which I do think it is female) does appear to be Tanimbar (I will say something looks different about her though), and the baby is most likely a Merauke (T. gigas species tend to look alike at that young of age). Three different species.

Re: Question BTS behavior
IMO this was a horrible experience for the new BT. Coming into a new environment and then having something try to attack and breed
. WOW I may be new to BT's, but not new to reptiles, parrots or dogs.
I agree with the parasite testing. Even tho you think everything looked good and she is in good health, it is important. You don't know if maybe a "new" one was put in with her for a short while.

Re: Question BTS behavior
I've had a captive bred and born snake come to me with CRYPTO...NEVER EVER skip quarantine. Look up crypto if you dont know what it is. HINT: its incurable, and fatal.
It doesnt just happen with snakes...depending on who you got it from, petstores shove animals together with no care if they are Wild Caught, Captive Born or Captive Born and Bred. Doesnt usually matter.
Did you actually let them go through with the mating? Do you have any idea what you will do with the mixed babies if they result?
I'm glad you put them in their own cage. DO NOT put the baby in with either one of the adults.
Sellers just sell for what they think they can get, price in NO WAY will tell you what locality the skink is. Heck, normally if the sellers arent breeders, they dont even care about what locale or know what it is. My merauke was marketed as an "Indonesian Giant" lol. *shakes head*

Re: Question BTS behavior
If you could take a picture of your new BTS and post it here, lots of experienced people could look at it and give you their opinion on what kind, and what sex it is.
If you take the picture from up above as the BTS is straight, get some pictures as close as you can while still including the whole skink, some from a bit higher up.
If you can, it might be helpful if you posted some pictures from other angles as well, to tell what kind of BTS it is.
We might still be able to help you out a bit?
