Retes Stack and Snail question.

Postby xxmonitorlizardxx » Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:48 am

I know that Retes stacks are good with achieving the correct basking temps with monitors, but has anyone used them with blueys? Even if you haven't do you think the would work?

Also I will try breeding feeder insects(roaches, worms, and snails[The land species)]. But I have'nt located a snail breeder. Neither can I find them in the wild. Do you know any snail breeders, or do you have any tips on how to find them?
Or if you breed your own snails would you be willing to sell them?

if you come here during summer you can get a few hundred snails from my garden. just bring a suitable gift for litchie and i will help you collect them.

it will not have an impact on their numbers here, their only limit is the amount of food available.

retes stack could work, but dont need the extreme temps of monitors with blueys,so u wouldnt need all the levels, plus blueys arent as agile with climbing as monitors so you may need to address that to,but they are curious buggers and even if only 2 storys high, gives them more area to investigate, more exercise and the plus more hide options so id say go for it

What Rich said. I don't think bluetongues would benefit much from a Retes stack, but the basic concept of providing a variety of temperature gradients is a good one. A 2 story one might get used appropriately.

I find that old T shirts are much appreciated by blueys. You can put them on the warm end and they provide a slightly warmer hiding place. Also, at night, they stay warmer than just shavings...so mine usually sleeps in them.

I second the other posts, its a good idea, but BTS don't need as many layers, and it needs to be modified for their body structure.

my little brother for some reason calls blankets woobies (hes 11 i think its some kind of joke), so we gave my IJ a "woobie" and he LOVED IT! he always slept under there, and it was just an old washcloth we had :)

I'm not sure about the Retes stack, as i've had no experience with those, but although skinks can be inventive climbers, they still tend to be pretty bad at it :) I would think it wouldnt be effective. However i doubt it would hurt (unless it was realllly tall. might try one with a ramp maybe?

Yeah I was going to have cork bark attached to the top.I was also going to have it about 3 stacks high. Because Bberry likes it alittle hotter than normal(But not too hot).

Cool link ML, I've never heard of a Rete's stack before. I guess my hot hide does a similar thing, with not as many layers: its a basking tile on top of 4 legs. Its an interesting idea. Let us know how yours turns out and how BBerry likes it!
