baby IJ keeps peeing on me!

Postby ykopel » Tue Nov 01, 2011 5:31 pm

Ruth is great girl. We've had her for about 2 months now. She's only about 4 months old right now. The problem is that during the past several weeks she has been peeing on me and our furniture NONSTOP.

I can't predict when she'll go- it could be right after coming out or a couple minutes later. But I can seriously let her pee, then take her out a couple minutes later- and she'll still pee on me again! she's done it 3 times in a day!

I know that they pee when they're scared sometimes- but isn't that just a little bit? I'm talking about legit peeing (sometimes she'll start to go so i'll put her in tuperware and she'll poo in there too) with the urates and everything. Is that normal?

Well its getting to be a bit much- especially for my wife who's not really a reptile person to begin with. Any advice? Thanks.

most of my skinks will only "pee" when they are nervous. Mainly this is with my tannies. Its pretty much guaranteed that they will pee whenever handled.

If I had to guess, you just have a shy skink. Is it when you're handling her when she pees?

My skink will pee every time when he's outside and big gust of wind comes ;-) I think it is nerves too.

i've read that sometimes they can go to the bathroom on you because they have become active and just need to go. This happens sometimes with my merauke, or other skinks i have that go exploring. I let them explore on my desk first, because inevitably they either pee, poo or both. Its easier to clean my desk than my floor. :)

Some skinks are just scaredy cats, like my indo, she will pee on you about 80% of the time you pick her up. Just how she is.

Our guy pees/poos once almost right after coming out . When we first got him he might go a second time but now he's ok . Usually if we take him out twice he doesn't pee the second time . He could be shy

Thanks for the replies.

I suppose it could be nerves, but i think it more likely that it has to do with her being active. She doesn't specifically pee when being handled, but more like whenever she's out of her terrarium. I'll could her out, put her on the couch for a second, and boom- she goes right away.

i've been thinking about maybe saving a bigger cardboard box to let her play in til she goes (i coud keep newspaper or something on the bottom). Do any of you do something like this?

Also- can you really let your guy loose on your desk? mine is fine on a padded surface, but i am quite sure she would fall off the edge of something slick.

I let mine on my desk, but keep a close eye on them so they dont jump off...some of them wont but some of them will pretend they have a parachute and try and go "bombs away!!!" and i'm like *GRAB*

I have a lot of random stuff on my desk, i make sure none of it is small enough for them to eat, and set em loose. I"d rather they poo on my desk then my couch. :D

Here's what I would suggest, I do it myself, works for us.
Yes, when a skink starts moving it's like a digestive kick-start. Add some warmth, and you got yourself a skinky bathroom.
When I'm taking my skinks somewhere where people will be handling them, I feed them at least 4 days ahead of the day we're going out. Handle lots in the days between, warm bath=skinky enema at our house. Give them AMPLE opportunities to "empty" what's in there. Less worry on the big day.

If we're just hanging out, or showing them off, we start off with a big shallow tub, or a box, cardboard, plastic tub, whatever. The bigger the better. We put electric heating pads under the tub, nice and warm. Put some stuff in the tub for the skink to explore; open paper lunch bag, crumpled up kitchen towel, colorful ball, baby rattle, or whatever else that can't be swallowed.
Then I hide some snails or canned caterpillars here and there. Put a skink in, it's like a BTS carnival! And between the warmth and the activity, if there's anything even remotely close to coming out; Voila!

I don't ever put them on anything they can fall off of, unless I'm RIGHT THERE. The whole time. But I think it's good for the BTS to learn what to do with an edge. Or, at least FOR YOU to know how they react to an edge. Our first BTS was a 6 year old BIG Merauke. I swear, that guy didn't have ANY depth perception; he'd just walk right off the edge of anything. Wouldn't even slow down! The other 3 we've had will go up to the edge and peak down, but won't even get close enough for gravity to take over.
If you have carpeted stairs, you could maybe try it out, see how she reacts. Be right there to grab her if she goes a bit too far, but should the unthinkable happen, she goes over and for some reason you don't catch her, it's what, 8-10 inches?
