Postby realis88 » Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:08 pm

bluetongue I die a tail

the beginning of his mouth was swollen and mucus out like a cold such as runny nose on a snake
a week later his right yesterday even udh lemes and lifeless...
estimate of what causes it? virus or because of his cage cold temperatures?
because I replace the paper substrate, before using aspen beding

I'm so sorry for your loss Realis.

Was he being kept outside or inside? Do you have air conditioning? If he was being kept outside I wouldn't think he could get too cold since you are in Indonesia.
No, it's a SKINK not a SKUNK. Er, no, it's not a Blue Tongued Skank---although I do think I dated one of those at some point.

I store them in wooden cages on the front porch, so it is not exposed to sunlight and rain are directly
in its cage I did not give him any conditioning or heating

I don't think your temps in Java are much different from the natural temps in the eastern parts of Indonesia where this one is from. If I lived there I would keep mine outside as well. If the BTS wasn't in sunlight was it being given Calcium/D3? Maybe the BTS got sick from something else. How are your other skinks doing?

I'm really sorry for your loss. It looks like maybe an infection or something in her mouth.

most cactuses are okay as long as the animal does not eat it - i wonder if a BTS would actually try to eat one? and if it was a tree it was a bit higher up?

but a swollen mouth and throat and mucus coming out/vomit could point to certain cactus meat poisoning....

im sorry for your loss T__T

I think he did not try to eat it but I never saw him accidentally bite the cactus tree when he fights
cactus tree height was not so easy to hit her mouth

then i can say, it was not the cactus unless a big piece of it is missing. so dont worry about that.

the cactus spikes are mostly not poisonous (only annoying) and animals know not to bite them. however, if it had been a cactus without spikes, and the skink ate a big piece if the cactus meat it couldve been bad.

Or maybe a piece of the cactus fell off. She then bit it getting needles in her mouth. Which caused an infection which she died from?

Realis--do I understand you correctly, that she was pregnant/gravid?

Her whole bottom jaw looks swollen. I don't know what mouth-rot looks like so I can't speak to that. Thank you for posting the last pictures of her. I hope someone with more experience will look at the pictures and hopefully have an idea what might have happened.

I am very, very sorry that you lost her.

I gave a cactus with a very fine spines rather sharp thorns like a cactus with spikes
I also feel that there is no problem
his death may indeed already arrived
