Nae, I added you on deviantart! :D

I don't draw much (anymore) but this still counts as art, right?

Since a lot of people have asked how I do my paintings, I thought that perhaps they may be interested in a work in progress shot -

Image

(Its a python if you cant figure it out from all the splotches of colour )

So yeah, basically I start of with something dodgy like this, then build up colours, then once this is done Ill add shadows and highlights to the whole thing for continuity~

I started this one a while ago, but with school and exams its gotten no where  But now that 12 years later, I have finally finished school, Ill have plenty of time to work on it until I manage to find a job!

I know it is just an eye and really it could belong to any animal, but while I drew it I thinking of it as reptilian so there. Plus it's green.

Cool pic but whats the blood for?

Does it matter what the blood is for? It's art

Nae- do you use multiple layers? Or do it all on one layer? I'm really tempted to try this.

Ummm...It really depends. I tend to do each segment of ...bits... on a different layer (So the eye is one layer, the white scale patches are another, the mouth is another etc). But whether Ill have layers in those sections depends. In the photo the python is based on, the coils at the back are out of focus. So I did the splotches of colour on one layer, that way I can just blend it together easier. Then I did a separate layer for the texture.

Where as the eye is I think about 10 layers...Its especially helpful to have layers for bits that are just for textures, or that you think you might want to change the colour of later, or apply a filter.

So yeah, it really depends on the effect your going for, whether your 100% sure on whether or not what you are doing is going to work out, if you want to apply a filter to that section, possibly make it slightly transparent etc etc. Sometimes I use only a few layers, other times (Like the tortoise) they can amount to over 100, but sometimes I do it all on one - Its really up to you! :D

I did one of my bird on one layer - http://xdeathcricket.deviantart.com/art/Maki-256161963

Poptart  I am loving that name, hahaha!

Ali, I was meaning to do this to go with my ridiculously long paragraph, but I forgot  (And ignore the half finished....thing... I was going to cut it out, but I thought it would be easier to understand if you could actually see what the folders corresponded to.)

Thank you Nae! That painting looks awesome btw.
I played around in photoshop last night and tried to do a painting, I think I get how its done but I don't really have the patience for it lol. It sort of made me miss painting by hand- I find it very therapeutic and soothing to be able to manipulate the lines, colors, etc. I think it might be time for me to do a bluey painting!

No problem :D

It definitely does take a little while to get used to - You might find working with a sketch or photo to be easier, perhaps? Using a tablet may also make it feel more like a 'normal' painting (If you didnt already~) :D

But yes, it is definitely time for a bluey painting ;)

I did work from a photo, but I since I was just experimenting, I didn't work it as thoroughly as I normally would. (Normally I'd grid off my reference photo, sometimes do a pre-sketch, and then sketch it out before laying in color). It also doesn't help that I was just using the track pad on my laptop  I'm sure a tablet would make it much, MUCH easier lol.

I do have a recent non-reptile painting.... :noknow: ... Too bad this thread is about reptile artwork....

...

....

...

oops!

I am so relieved I finally got my tablet working again - Everything Ive posted so far was done with my laptop touch pad  So annoying  (Jeffs tortoise took HOURS because of that, hahah~)

But yes, tablets are definitely much easier!

Aaaaw, hes adorable! I wish I could paint, but I just dont have the patience~
