Gnats in viv?

Postby Deathreturns » Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:24 am

hey all,

So i seem to have a lot of gnats in my bts viv. Are they harmful in anyway? If so what's the best way to get rid of them? Any thoughts would be helpful :)

if they are anything like mosquitos, then make sure you clean the water bowl twice a day, since thats where they will have their eggs.

if its not, then i have no idea since i couldnt find a swedish translation of wikipedia. sorry.

What kind of substrate are you using? The larvae need it pretty darn moist to do well. If they annoy you you can dry the cage out a bit. Moist enough for gnats is probably too moist for BTS I'd imagine.

It's a dirt and wood substrate. I'm awaiting some new stuff to come through at the moment. I'll dry out the viv and see if that helps. I'm guessing there harmless?

Maybe change out the substrate to paper towels for a while? If the skink was burrowing rather than using a hide you would have to add a hide though.
No, it's a SKINK not a SKUNK. Er, no, it's not a Blue Tongued Skank---although I do think I dated one of those at some point.

a fan usually will get gnats off of house plants. Maybe you could set up a temporary cage for your skink and put a fan over the viv for a couple days? That would help dry it out as well.
