BTS Breeders

Postby imykraig » Mon Aug 15, 2011 4:03 am

I posted this also in the classified section as i wasnt sure which i shuold use.

I am looking for a reliable BTS breeder in Ireland.
Or a site which will ship to ireland and has reliable references (previous customer etc.) because i want to be sure that should the need arise that i can get help from them or even another bts in the future.

Also i would like to no if there are specific types of wood which should NOT be used to build a terranium?

Any help with these questions is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Cedar and pine are toxic to skinks.

Pine is fine after it is Kiln dried which is most lumber used for constuction applications. This removes much of the oils/aromas that supposedly cause the issues. Most pine beddings are also Kiln Dried. Atleast this is what I have concluded from my own research of bedding, and not just regurgitating the same information that is commonly shared.

Also, can you show me where the evidence shows it is toxic to Blueys? I have never seen a single report of pine bedding causing issues with blueys. Not that Im saying its not toxic, I have just never seen/hear of a real life situation that caused issues with a skink.

Cedar and pine can both exude phenols. Pine plywood in particular may be manufactured using phenol glues.

Phenols have been found to have health issues with many species:

I'm sorry - I don't know of anyone in Ireland keeping or breeding blueys. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of people in Ireland keeping blueys which is why you haven't had a helpful reply yet. :(

Good luck with your search!

@Katrina

thanks for the reply.
Ive asked my local pet shop which i firmly trust and she is looking around for one. they had some in before but she did not know what species it was but was honest enough to tell me that.
I do, however, feel a little bit uneasy that she might not know what to look for as when ever they had them they ordered it for someone and it was collected on the day of arrival at the shop. i have never purchased an animal from them that died or had a problem to this day. is this just me being paranoid. haha. sorry began to ramble on. hahaha.

one last question: what effects if any would urea-formaldehyde have on blueys. i only ask because i plan on building my own viv and have found that MDF releases it.
