Hello Everybody,
I'm new to the forums, and wanted to say hi. I'm stoked about all the Blue tongue knowledge here and hope to help if I can also. To start off, I had a question about some bedding. Has anyone tried Herpabed? Its from Vitafarm and I was interested in making an order from them. I always like to get the most for my shipping costs so I was thinking about trying it. One thing that I noticed was that it was made from pine bark. I know that the majority of the toxic oils of pine are in the wood itself and not the bark, but I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this product. Thanks in advance, and glad to be a part of the forums.

Okay, the only thing is that confuses me is Repti bark is made from fir bark, and fir is a pine tree too. So if Repti bark is pine bark and people use that for their reptiles then I almost don't see the difference. ahhhgg...lol. I guess i could order some and use my judgement when it gets here. the most i would be out is a couple bucks. The thing that got me interested was that blue tongue on the package.

One thing to remember is the reptile industry is not governed by anyone. There are no government agencies verifying what products are being marketed for any particular reptile species. The FDA governs the dog and cat pet food industry, but to my knowledge they do not monitor the reptile industry. It is up to the owner to do their own research and find out what is safe to use and what is not.
As far as pine bedding goes, with small animals it is commonly acceptable to use KILN DRIED pine. If it does not mention kiln dried, it is recommended to not use it. I find it easier to just eliminate it all together and then you dont need to worry about it.

Re: Herpabed bedding? Anyone..
I have just the other day bought a bag of herptabark and I myself really like and I think so does my blue tongue. The bedding isn't entirely bark like reptibark it's more of a soil like bedding. Initially it smells a bit weird but after a an hour the smells disappears almost entirely. I mix some of the clean, old bedding I used as well ( which was aspen) and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Hope that helped.

Hey Blotchedskinks - this thread is really old, so I'm going to lock it (we generally ask not to revive threads that are more than 3-4 months old). Thanks for the review though, I've still never seen that bedding!
