It always amazes me to see a newborns drive to walk right away. And it is amazing to see Pearl try and eat the camera right after giving birth. Neat Video Zach....good mommy Pearl

I tell you guys, I don't know if it's a Northern thing, but these two acted like they were PROTECTING the babies to the fullest of their ability. I was amazed; I've always known them (and read extensively) that they just drop them off, but when we came anywhere near either of them while giving birth, she would run directly at us. If we reach in to try to grab a baby...she would run over, scare us away, then put her head next to the babies and nudge them with her nose as if to see if they were ok. I couldn't believe it. Everybody here besides Holly and I were casually trying to say it's obvious she's being the protective loving mother, but BTS aren't like that from my own experience with IJ's or from talking to any other breeders! Sheesh, I'm almost convinced these 2 Northerns were being concerned parents.... :noknow:

For those who don't know, BTS are for the most part solitary in the wild, and when giving birth, the mother drops off the baby, and that baby is independent from day one. The babies don't stay with the mother, she doesn't find them food, etc.

Zach, do you think that in the wild she can drop and run so to speak, so has developed parental instincts due to the confines of your tank, I mean in the wild the youngens do a legger for cover as soon as they can with no restrictions. All in all a good year for your brood, you'd better keep the Leopard print for next season, it seems to of done the trick ha haa

Pearl's babies are absolutely adorable too! Funny how both Northerns had more maternal instincts than the IJs. When do you separate the babies from the moms? Did they just react protectively when they were newborns or has it continued? Glad to see that even the experts' blueys keep suprising them. I never get bored with all the amazing behaviors or intelligent things that my bluey does. I seem to have a greater appreciation for him each day. They are truely amazing creatures. I can't wait til we get our baby from you. We are getting her tank ready as I speak. Don't get me wrong, my son is excited, but (as you may have noticed) I am giddy. I keep reading all my "juvenile care" notes over and over! I can't wait! :ohyes:

Keep the pictures coming. And, to echo Leigh, definitely keep the leopard sheets!

Hi Zach,

Yes my Faye had 14 babies aswell!
Faye is a Northern and has never shown any protective / aggressive behaviour toward me at all in the 5 yrs she has given birth. ... just dropped them ignoring my removing the babies.
Phyllis however, also a Northern, acted just how you are describing .. charging toward me etc. and it seemed unquestionable she was being protective and upset that her babies were being taken away. I recall her seeming upset for a few days following my removing babies. Interested to know Pearls disposition next few days. I remember I felt really guilty that I had taken her babies and wished that I left them with her longer.
Would be interesting sometime to leave a Mother ( who displays this behaviour) and babies alone for a few days , perhaps in a large outdoor pit to see what happens. Perhaps Geoff has some insight here?

Peach acted exactly as you described your Phyllis. The next couple days after she gave birth she continued to be on the defense. I felt sad for her and tried to pet her and give her a little extra attention. She was not very receptive and would open her mouth slightly when I attempted to give her attention.
Last night however, she was pushing on the front glass of her cage and seemed to be trying to get out. As soon as I opened her door, she came right up to me and allowed me to pet her. She closed her eyes and lifted her body up where I was petting her-almost like a cat does. I took her out and held her in my lap for a while. Her defensiveness seems to have subsided.
It would be interesting to see how the mothers behave when the babies are left in their moms’ enclosures for a couple days.

Pearl was right in the middle of having her 9th baby when Zach or I must have been too close to her cage-she charged at us and began pacing her cage as if on high alert. We gave her some space and watched from a distance. She waited for a while and did not end up having her 9th for another 15-20 minutes.

Hi Zach,

From a guy who has a few Northerns - many of my females become very protective of their young. It's cute to see them attack me actually trying to shoo me away.

After a while they become normal again - sweet as pie.
