Nail clipping time?

Postby Shellyjean » Sun May 13, 2007 10:21 am

We seem to be getting scratched up pretty good anymore. Can any of you experienced keepers tell me if these look like they need to be clipped? Thanks!

I probably wouldn't cut them just yet. Do you have something in the cage that helps wear down his nails? Like a rock or something.

I've been planning on asking this for awhile just never got around to it.

For the skinks that don't have crazy long claws but just needle sharp tips that don't seem to wear away enough would it hurt to lightly dull them with some ultra fine grit sand paper.
Quigly has very tiny claws that don't need clipping but are sharp enough that even just walking on you can scratch deep enough to hurt and occasionally drawa tiny bit of blood.

They have rocks, logs, and are also outside wandering on different surfaces on nice days.

I didn't think they looked very long. I think we just need tougher skin, lol.

nails don't look too long yet, the sandpaper idea would prolly work well though. Btw... I'm super jealous of the new av pic... i doubt i'll ever get one that good!

I don't know about sandpaper, lol. Maybe file the sharp points with an emory board. My beardies don't mind that.

Thanks Kyle, just send Marley to me for a few months and I'll get ya good tongue shot. I just got lucky and had a good tongue day. I'll have to post them one of these days.

I'd rub the tips with sandpaper/nail file, or just try to "nip" the very end off with the clippers (just to remove the sharp end, not really take any length off).

Either that, or you could make "skink mittens"! :hyper:

If the nails are scratching you, this is a very good idea. Otherwise, the nails are fine. Any longer though, they will start to need attention.
