BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

now for the good news,lol,whilst up the back to see if any of the wild easterns had popped out of the grass comost pile for a bask i finally managed to have the camera on hand,lol,so heres a pic,also notice its the same wild eastern that was in the rock and rubble pile that i got a pic of in march or april i think,there is quite a few in there so will keep my eyes peeled for further photo opps,there are a couple of nice ones in there,one large green phased one especially,solid brute that is camera shy but hoping to cross paths with him again soon,lol

Okay, this may be silly... but can you handle the wild ones with any amount of ease or do they huff and hiss and try to eat your face?

They have to be in the wild to try to eat your face?? Someone should get that memo to Tarzan....I'm not sure he got the first copy.

Heh! I have met one in captivity that tried to eat my face, but I thought it may be more likely in the wild maybe?

Sounds like Tarzan needs to check his "inbox" more often... no?

first of many zach,thats wild eastern number 1,also to earlier question,some of the wild ones can be picked up and they r mellow as,calmer than some captives,but some can be pretty viscious,lol,but they r blueys,there harmless enough,well unless they get a hold of u and hang on,lol,there was a yearling green phase eastern in the wood pile next to the compost on the otherside to the rocks though,was one of the nastyest bluetongues ive picked up,was fine until i picked it up no hissing ect,but as soon as it was in my hand it tried to roll and bite,and was very persistant,lol,i put it back down and it just kept basking,this was in early autum,so was still quite warm,a strange experience with that little tacker,was a nice looker as well,ill go check the compost and see if there are any more out today

Every bluey I've seen in the wild has been sweet!!! As Richard said - generally they huff and puff but more often than not - once you have them and all legs are supported - they are fine. I have a flora and fauna reserve about 5mins away, plus all the bush around my house and there are blueys everywhere - all are sweet!

That does it!! I'm moving to Aussie!! My hubby will go for it just on the strength that my critters can live outside "his" house some of the time.

We don't share the same fascination with lizards and other exotics

there not all puppy dogs,there are the odd agro ones that are hard to pick up,and hold,they constantly try to bite,aggressivly,but as a whole most r pretty mellow,just puff up and hiss

Great Pic Rich rising out of a HUGE cow chip . Getting dung beatles perhaps ..Gave mine a plate of bush critter,s ..I went out and got a cup full .Was like a a frenzy .Shingle do these robotic head movements chasing crawling things ..a plate of wood roache,s , meal worm,s crickets ..MM nice graze

haha,thats just grass mate,mowed grass pile,does look cowish though,lol,was nt looking for food,to cold here for that now,the grass warms up so they actually come out to bask and cool off would u believe,last winter they use to pop out of the compost and just lay on the lawn,as when the sun is on the compost pile,the grass clippings heat right up,so call it smart use of there eco system,lol,most i ever saw at once out basking to cool off was 5 last year,thats what got me interested to watch and see what they do,im going to take temp readings ect see whats going on in there world,kinda fascinates me,lol,so i will keep this thread going if anyone is interested

must be fantastic seeing blueys in the wild and not in a pet store i'm VERY gelous of you Ausralians.

As for sweet, wild skinks.... not so sure! Yes, they are easy to catch and handle if you hold them securely, but I am certain each one of them has it in them to bite your arm off, given half a chance. This is speaking after the experience of being charged at by a wild and highly cranky Eastern in the Clare Valley.... whatever he was hiding behind the clump of bush where I had stepped out of my car, he sure wasn't going to share with me!

They are easy to tame down, all of my rescues are 'sweet as pie' in their own individual ways now, but you still have to respect their wild and care-free personalities if you stumble across one in the great outdoors.

Yere its all bluff & huff and puff . even so there vise like grip is strong you pick them up quite fast by the back of the kneck & they settle i pick up every one i find from febuary threw the summer when there thick on the ground .And carry surgical forcepts and get there ticks outa there ears , i hate the paralysis tick we get here...give,s the baby,s jelly bone & some have had 49 ticks .I get them off and drop em into boiling water . And the University study them.

must be a relief to be set free with out an ear full of pesky ticks ..This is the female so after they come in and you de louce them ,
eggs keep hatching for around 3-4 weeks..they make a mess of a new born .. This is a classic pick of the tick on a adult bobtail .

icky tick alright,but stunning stumpy makes up for it,my original pair were obviously wild caghts as when i got them from a shop they were covered in ticks,id just sold some cunningham skinks to the shop and saw the poor stumpies,they were under weight and not great looking but i couldnt resist them,and glad i saved the poor buggers,was amazing how they came good after some much needed tlc

Man, those ticks are something.

That ticks MASSIVE , is that the normal size or is that an after feed size, you need bolt croppers not surgical tweezers
