Canned cat/dog food (followup poll)

Postby Tigergenesis » Sun Jul 17, 2005 5:16 am

I know we did this poll before, but we have new members and I'm curious to see if the results have changed any.

So how often do you use cat/dog food & what kind/brand do you use?

Opps - I forgot to answer.

I only keep canned cat food on hand in a pinch. I use only high grade, human quality all natural brands w/o preservatives, additives, artifical coloring/flavoring, by-products, seafood or carcinogens. My favorite (and the kind the blueys seem to enjoy) is Spot's Stew Original recipe for cats.

INGREDIENTS: Chicken, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Celery, Chicken Liver, Carrots, Green Beans, Water, Chicken Liver, Green Peas, Turkey, Calcium Lactate, Soy Sauce, Dried Kelp, Garlic Powder, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Zinc Gluconate, Taurine.

* GUARANTEED ANALYSIS: CRUDE PROTEIN...4.5% (Min.)
* CRUDE FAT...1.5% (Min.)
* CRUDE FIBER...1.5% (Max.)
* MOISTURE...90% (Max.)

I rely more on 'fresh' human meats (cooked: chicken/turkey breasts, lean ground beef/turkey/chicken, shredded pot roast cubes) and inverts (waxworms, silkworms, live snails).

Right now with Saphira I am using cat food with ever meal. I am also using it with Frankie because she eats when I mix her veggies with it. It may not be natural for them but I think it's more important that she eats.

Spike and Baylee have been eating human meat mix with their veggies for a while now. With them I'm starting to try get their protien through insects, pinkies and snails. They will both eat a plate of veggies without me having to add anything to it and I feel that the insects, pinkies and snails are a more natural diet for them.

I use just regular old cat food right now, but i'm in the process of ordering some of the Spot's Stew from a website so I should have it in a week or so and then that's what i'll use exclusively.

Thanks Tiger for the poll. This will give me a good idea what is better. I checked out Spots stew for cats. Sounds great, what site do you buy it from?

I've actually found it in health food stores around here. A lot of health food stores here also carry dog and cat products. We also have a chain of stores called Pet Supplies Plus that carries it.

Thanks. I'll call around some stores by me to see if they carry it. That cat food has some really good stuff in it. It think that would make a great mix with fresh veggies, a bug or two and a little fruit. :D

Sarah won't eat ANY veggies without catfood on them... So I kind of HAVE to feed it to her every meal... A typical meal for her consists of greens, veggies, catfood, and either superworms or a pinky or two.

Lissa eats for the most part a "skink mix" that James Wilson told me how to make. Basically it is just Iams Chicken flavored catfood mixed with equal parts of mixed vegetables and turnip greens. I also give her real meat, fruits, berries, and scrambled eggs on occasion. Did I mention she eats like an ox...on steroids??? 8)

I've been talking to a few people recently and am going to start using the Spot's Stew quite regularly. All of my guys are also loving a new dry catfood, which contains lots of goodies like dandelion leaves, in it.

I alternate feedings. One feeding is pretty even mix of veggies/greens/Iams catfood and the next feeding is just veggies/greens. Fruit is put in at irregular intervals.

I use James Wilson skink mix too. So I am an Iam's chicken cat food person. I don't use it when I feed silkies. Elwood will not eat greens without silkies or catfood on them.

LOL. For me 'in a pinch' is when I run out of cooked meat, can't cook anything and don't have any worms - like the other day. The day came to cook and my knee was really bothering me so I barely got out of bed. I was glad I had a can of Spot's Stew in the cabinet. I just add some greens and a couple bites of fruit and supplements and I was set.

Yes, that's what she's using. There's also one by Old Mother Hubbard brand called Wellness that has all kinds of veggies in it. I have some of that too..
