First Time NBTS Owner Shedding Question

Postby LivingSatellite » Wed Apr 02, 2025 6:37 am

I got my Northern Blue Tongue Skink a few days ago. She's already an adult and obviously needs her time to adjust to her new home. Since I've never owned one I've been reading up on these guys like crazy, but I've encountered a curious issue. I didn't notice when I got her but she's shedding. While this is totally fine, she definitely isn't up for handling or even letting me near her yet. I'm worried about the common issue of toe loss or stuck sheds, but since I can't handle her the usual bath suggestion seems to be off the table. So, some questions: 1. How can I get her to come out to inspect her shedding process? She's buried herself and just sits in her hides, so I don't have a good enough view to check up on how she's progressing. 2. If I somehow can see her, how do I take care of stuck sheds? 3. If I absolutely must handle her, what's the best way to do it? And 4. When should I be concerned and call a vet?
It's worth noting she isn't wild caught and did come from a very nice breeder, she probably just needs time to adjust to me. She shys away when I try to approach her and will even huff at me so I've backed off right away, but am still at an impasse. I tried spraying her tank today to raise humidity and she hissed at that A LOT, so I'm not sure what else to try. Thank you for any advice.

It's normal for skinks to be shy at first—just give her time to adjust. To help with shedding, keep humidity high, and if stuck shed becomes a concern, use a warm, moist towel or soak her gently when she's more comfortable to avoid handling stress.
