New BTS owner, need help!

Postby JXMT13 » Tue Jan 21, 2025 12:31 pm

Hello!

I just finally got my first BTS and I absolutely love it! Day one she (i think she) was very explorative but the next day I found her burrowed and she's been burrowed for two days now and hasn't touched her food. I'm not sure if this is normal but any help is greatly appreciated! Also how can i tell if she is a she?

Thank you so much!

Hi, congrats on your blue tongue lizard! what is her name? (if it is a her haha)
It is absolutely normal for blue tongue lizards to burrow and sleep for a few days, often depending on the weather.
they tend to sleep for long periods of time during winter and are quite active in summer:)
as your blue tongue is relatively new it also needs time to settle and acclimatise to the new surroundings!
if i were you i would try heat her up a bit with a lamp or natural sunlight, and try berries or some cooked meat. all my blue tongue lizards love to eat foods like that,
they also tend to eat better outside while foraging (with close supervision to ensure they don't disappear).
in regards to your second question, often females are quite larger then males and longer.
Males tend to have more orange eyes while females are more brown in colour, as well as males having a more arrow shaped head. Hope this helps!
i have four blue tongue skinks (three males and one female) and those are the main differences xx
good luck! i would love to know how you go and see some photos.

What type of BT is it? This time of year brumation is typical for some. Can you post a picture? My Northerns are sometimes still in brumation this time of winter. (I am in the Northeast) It varies by location but typical behavior in your area.

Thank you all so much for the help! She's been coming out more and more! Her name is Bellatrix (i'm a huge harry potter fan lol)! Here's a picture of her! If someone could tell me if she's indo or northern that would be very helpful!

I should add, I do not believe Meraukes brumate, but cooler temps could trigger this behavior. Once she gets used to new surroundings you'll notice more activity.

She is very cute:)
She also looks to be a good size so I wouldn’t be concerned about weight
