feeding question

Postby linkj154 » Sat Jul 16, 2022 12:16 pm

I am in the process of getting my skink to eat healthier. So far she has refused to eat anything except her favorite treats. For about a week now I have been only offering healthy food. She will probably start eating it when she is hungry enough. My question is, should I only give her protein after she eats enough of her vegetables?

HI there. So I am a little confused about your question. Skinks diets should consist of 50-60%protein. You never want to with hold a protein source. Please refer to this: http://bluetongueskinks.net/foodchart.html. Vegetables should be about 40% and fruit about 10%. What I like to do is mix everything really fine in a food processor so that the skink can't pick out just its favorites. I hope this helps.

Thank you. What I meant is that she is especially picky about eating vegetables and I wondered if not offering protein until after she ate vegetables would get her to eat vegetables, but blending everything together so that she can't pick out the protein and leave the vegetable would work most likely. This wouldn't work with live insects but it definitely would for dog food, meat, and bluey buffet.

Hi there, I understand what you meant now. I would suggest to just blend or process all the foods together to make it to hard for your skink to pick out what they don't like. This also helps to prevent a picky eater, Good luck and I hope that helps.
