My Skink Managed to disappear! Is she safe under her substrate?

Postby Noodle » Sat Jan 22, 2022 3:50 pm

So I'm a very new keeper, my skink has been in the house for about 3 hours. I thought I did all my research to make sure she'd be comfortable, but I didn't quite count on this.

After watching her for a while, I went to go make dinner, and returned to find the enclosure seemingly empty! I know she can't have gotten out; the enclosure I got locks both in front and in the lids, they can't be opened from either side. I can only assume that she's completely burrowed under the substrate we got.

My biggest concern is whether she can breathe under there. Is burrowing completely under the substrate normal? Is my skink okay and able to breathe down there?

Hi there. This is perfectly normal for young skinks and skinks in general. They love to burrow. It is natural for them. I would recommend giving your skink time to adjust.
