BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

Was wondering if anyone made a mixture using play sand? I use forest floor currently but was wondering if I could mix a little play sand with it to help retain humidity and a little more digging/tunneling fun for my IJ?

Personally I have never used it, all my cages have sliding glass doors and when sand gets kicked into those tracks it's not fun. The sound alone of glass scraping sand goes right through me. Very heavy too when you need to do a change. Although they could probably digest a bucket of rocks, I wouldn't want it kicked into their food either. I don't otherwise see a problem with it, perhaps others can offer more input.

The only time I had sand mixed in anything is the coco fibre I used to use which contained some sand, that’s about it. I’m not sure if mixing sand with something mostly chunky and coarse like cypress mulch/forest floor would work though. I feel like sand is better mixed with soil and other dirt-like substrates, not bark.

This may be a stupid question but I’ve got some top soil mix but it has little bits of fertilizer I’m assuming that’s not safe to use?

If it’s organic fertiliser (mostly consisting of animal by-products like blood and bone meal or from plants) it should be safe, if it has chemical fertilisers and manure don’t use it.

Top soil has to be plan soil. No fertilizer.
