Help identify wound.

Postby Unfocusedkey9 » Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:09 pm

My BTS a Halmahera , has developed a semi open wound on her tail. I'm a new bluey keeper so any help would be appreciated. Some details I think may be relevant.
Tank maintains humidity levels of 66-90 dropping and raising throughout the day.
Tank maintains a heat gradient of 65-74 on the cold side night to day. Heat from 70-84 on the warm end.
I have seen a few small bugs inside the tank that i have removed when spotted.
Substrate is a cypress mulch sphagnum moss mix.

Hello there. So first thing I noticed is that your temps are way to low for that species. You need a basking temp of 100-110. Then I wouldn't let your low end get lower than 72. Humidity needs to be 80-90%. Do you know how this wound happened? Do you have a heat mat or heat rock? It almost looks like a burn. I would have a reptile vet check I out.

There are no heat rocks or matts in the tank. it appears to be a somewhat of an open wound. Like abrasion from what i would guess? her basking spot reaches 95-102ish.
I currently have no idea where the wound came from. My best guess is rubbed raw on somthing but, i wouldn't think that anything in the tank would be capable of that. There is a stone in the front of her hide to encourage natural claw maint. I would imagine if it was the rock shes sliding and climbing over that her entire underside would suffer the same effects. Asfar as her temps go i got a ceramic heater trying to raise the rooms ambient. Its currently really cold here and im waiting on a RHP from pro products im in their production queue :(..

Just to float an option out there, this could be from tail thrashing or pinching. I have heard of other lizards lashing their tails around and damaging them, tho I would be surprised if a skink did the same. And as far as the pinching, if they were able to get wedged somewhere and yanked their tail from a tight place? I agree tho that the best bet is to see a specialist reptile vet and maybe sherlock holmes the tank and see if anything comes to you?

Okay, either way I would have it checked. The only other idea would be an infection of some sort as was suggested, the tail got caught somehow. Let us know what the vet thinks.

If you have seen bugs in the tank make sure they are not parasitic mites. Low temperatures and damp substrate often cause skin infections or scale rot.
