New Halmahera owner

Postby Jen85 » Mon Jan 25, 2021 1:57 pm

Hello All!

I have had my skink for a month now, he's beautiful and really calming down with handling. I've fully researched his species and diet is brilliant.

My concern is temperature and humidity. I've read in a lot of places humidity for Halmaheras needs to be as high as possible. His cool end is 90% and above, his basking side is 70 %. Temps are, cool end 26C and warm end 34C. I let it drop to an ambient temp of 25C over night. Since I've done this he's not been his self as much.

Is humidity too high for him? I'm getting quite confused with what's correct for his species. Any help is much appreciated thank you.

I attached two screenshots of climate data from both mid afternoon and evening today of where these skinks are sourced. Hopefully to put your mind at ease a bit.

Thank you very much! I'm just worrying as he seems to be sneezing a bit more often. The pet shop didn't have him in such high humidity, and I'm hoping the change hasn't stressed him out, or leading to a RI.

RI's are always a concern with imported skinks, especially those previously kept in subpar conditions. Sneezing in and of itself isn't necessarily a direct symptom of an RI, but it coupled with other signs (labored breathing, mucus discharge, sunken eyes, refusal to eat) would be grounds to have your skink immediately examined by a reptile vet.

I've just booked a vets appointment for him to be on the safe side. Thank you for your help
