Raw dog food?

Postby Lydia693 » Wed May 13, 2020 8:09 am

Hi everyone,

Ive jsut got my first blue tongue skink after keeping other reptiles for a long time and wanting one for years!

I am very conflicted on the advice concerning cooked or raw meat. I have been told by a friend that she fed hers a raw diet, but looking at forums and websites it seems the meat should be cooked.

However, I have bought some frozen raw chicken and rabbit dog food, would this be OK as it is made to be eaten raw by dogs?

Thanks in advance!

Thats fine. In fact, many many many breeders and keepers of BTS feed them cat and dogfood. Cat in the first year and dog after. Just make sure it contains plenty of vegies and whole meat parts like livers and bones etc.
A high quality grain-free dog/catfood is a very good diet for them. Also switch the type and/or brand every week to keep it interesting to them. Theres plenty of brands around to find and types of contents like turkey, duck, rabbit, etc etc. Just dont get the fish ones as fish isnt so good for them as far as I know.

Also make sure its canned wet food. Not the dry dog/cat food of course.

Dry dog/cat food is fine also. Have been using it for years. In nature, bluetongues eat roadkill and plenty of meat out there that no one cooks for them. Raw or cooked is just fine. When mine get a little picky a piece of raw chicken gets them right back on track. Just be careful of seasonings and whatnot, make sure there is no salt or seasonings on any meat you give them. I'm sure they wouldn't encounter that product in the wild and their systems may not be so equipped.

Hello there,

I am a little bit late to this discussion. However I believe there might have been a little confusion to the question of feeding raw meat to BTS.

Although I don't have my Blue tongue skink yet. I've also been watching, reading and following discussions on BTS to educate myself. Have seen this topic being discussed. From what I understand the worry is about purchasing meat (for human consumption) from the grocery store and feeding it raw. The reason folks are recommending this be cooked is the worry about additives to that meat. Such hormones etc. Not to mention the dyes added to the meat for human consumption to make it look good for us when we go shopping. While trying to sort through fact, fiction or myths. The folks who seem reputable and informed do say the exception to this is dog and cat food.

As always if I am off base, feel free to correct me. I'm a big boy I can take it! :)

I have no idea why one would do this anyway, its much easier to feed dog/cat food. Cooking meat made for human consumption does not remove the additives and chemicals in it. I've fed some of my finicky eaters raw chicken at times just to get them going after brumation or whatnot but I do not do this frequently.

That is a really good point about cooking not killing off additives/dyes. I live in a fairly remote area and hunting is part of the lifestyle here. At one point I was considering trying some rabbit and moose in one of the recipes just for a change. Recently a portion of the area close to me has been clear cut and a company is growing potatos there. Being a fair sized enterprise I suspect they will be using pesticides. So I have scrapped that idea, not worth the risk as there really is no way of determining if or how far that would spread with runoff.
