Basking bulb wattage?

Postby Caffee » Fri Mar 13, 2020 2:21 pm

Hey guys! Long time no see. Anyways, i’ve finally confirmed that i am getting my very own bluey sometime in April (yay!) and I'm pretty much ready other then not knowing what wattage to purchase for the basking spot. The tank is a 4x1.5x1. That being said, the bulb will be about 8-9 inches away from the basking spot. I was thinking a 75w but after some reading, i think that may be too high. But i still want this bulb to provide a good gradient temp through out the tank. The temperature of the room is staying in typically stays anywhere between 68-72 degrees. Ive read the same forums over and over again but still feel unsure. What are your guys thoughts?

75 watt sounds appropriate. I've even used 100 watt at similar distances. I highly recommend purchasing an infrared temperature gun and measuring the surface temperature the bulb produces. You want to see readings in the 105 to 120 range and adjust based on your skink's preferences. All of my skinks prefer a hot basking area around 120 degrees.

Hi, I’m so happy for you that you are getting a blue tongue! I have a 13 watt desert light for my blue tongue. I also have a heat mat under his favorite hide to keep him warm. I wish you the best with your blue tongue! :D
