Administering Medicine?

Postby CastyBoi » Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:34 pm

So, my Iranian Jay recently got a respiratory infection. Luckily, we found out rather early and are working on treatment and all that. Now, my biggest question/concern is how to administer the medicine for it. We've been told by the owner of the reptile store we bought him from that Baytril would probably be best. However, even he said to not be dead-set on Baytril and if there's something that a vet says will work better, to take that. So my question is mostly; is Baytril the best option for a respiratory infection? And what's the best way to administer it? I'm hesitant on doing it through injections since I'm not sure where I'd inject it and I would rather avoid putting my skink through more discomfort if there's a better alternative.

What ? owner of the pet store told you to give Baytril , did a reptile vet even see the skink ?

if not , then I wouldn't trust a pet store owner . franchisee or their staff with this " diagnosis " or "prescription".

I'd be consulting a GENUINE reptile vet and getting a proper diagnosis , and discussing a treatment plan with this GENUINE reptile vet.

If it's only early stages of a genuine RI , you might do more harm than damage by giving Baytril ( orally ? by injections ? and in the incorrect dosage ) . I'd be asking the REPTILE vet about F10sc nebulization at this stage to treat this "RI".

Whatever you do, do not administer baytril to your reptile. Get you pet to a reptile specialist vet and confirm if your pet does or doesn't have an RI. If he does they will treat with antibiotics that are needed.

Alright, so I took him to a reptile specialist vet (at the time, I didn't know there was one in my town) and she said he has ammonia. She did say to give him Baytril, so we've been giving it to him orally. He's doing a bit better now, especially with his raised humidity and everything. Figured I'd post an update instead of just staying silent.

I am curious as to how he is doing. In early February, my 14 month old - Baby Zeus came down with a Respiratory Infection. Once I got him to the vet, she also said pnemonia. She prescribed baytril 22.7/ml. I gave him .02/mouth for 10 days. Once home I connected a nebulizer up and increased his oxygen in the tank (the vet said when they gave him oxygen - he seemed to like it). I gave him almost like 'breathing treatments' with just the nebulizer and saline 2 times a day for 15 min each. Also at noon every day - I opened the hot shower up in my tiny lil bathroom - creating a steam room. He lays in my arms and we stand next to the shower to get all of the good how steam for another 15 - 20 minutes. My zeus has been off the meds now for 5 days and seems a bit better- his one eye still looks iffy. Yours was ill about a year ago - Im curious as to how he is today. Thank you
