Sugar cane mulch is too dry for my second skink and I can’t change him back to coco fibre (bc it irritates his eyes and can’t burrow)

I heard a lot of mixed opinions one saying it’s harmful and others saying it’s perfect as long as it’s well ventilated.

He’s currently in a fish tank with a mesh lid but I will soon be upgrading him to a wood enclosure with 2 vents on the sides, is this ventilated enough to safely use the bedding or no?

I need substrates that can handle moisture, natural, not too fine like coco fibre and it should be cheap, no overpriced pet shop bedding.

Please answer all these questions.

A drive in the country side to a bushy area and you should be able to find 120L tub full of the stuff that you can gather and it'll come for free ( if you don't include the cost the petrol to get there , gather it now while a lot of it is freshly fallen and let it dry in the sun in the and it'll be perfect.

I simply gather off my front lawn . If you'd asked on Sunday I could have sent you a few 20L bags of it ( just for cost of the postage) , as I just removed 1 cum bulkabag of the stuff off my roof ( overhanging branches ) and the FULL mini-skip the bulkabag went into went to recycler on Monday afternoon.

Expecting a bad bushfire season here in the lower Hunter so I'm taken heed of the warnings on TV by the RNSWBFB and removed cleared my roof and gutter of leaf litter and twigs and given my big gum tree a trim , removing the easier to get at overhanging branches ( those I can reach with a petrol pole trimmer (mini chain saw thingy) .
My handyman doing the tree trimming, note how big my bluegum is, it sheds leaves and twigs constantly , and occasionally a leafy twig in storms , and the bark of the trunk and thicker branches is great in my skink and dragon tanks as basking spots and hides.
I planted it as a 1m tall sapling in 1982 , planted it in summer and positioned it so it shades my lounge room and front patio in the afternoon in summer , but in winter.
He found a wild Eastern Bluetongue living amongst the concrete waste that had been piled up next to it's trunk and a couple eastern water skinks when he was gathering up to leaf litter under the tree.

Try you local gardening centre , they'll have it. Bunnings might too. Maybe your local garden soil / mulch seller too.
