Ok so one thing we’ve been debating has been where in house to place the enclosure, will it affect behavior positively or negatively to place it in living room with us and the 125 gallon cichlid tank and 3 year old child with tv, or should we dedicate a room basically to use for reptiles that’s quiet?
Thanks! Torie + Daniel.

Re: Placing enclosure in high traffic area/living room vs quiet room.
I have no quiet rooms, and no negative effects at all. I personally like to have them where I can observe them, so a room of their own would not be an option for me even if I did have the space. Matter of personal choice I believe, just so long as there is no danger to the animal. (No chance of a child knocking off a lamp, bumping into the cage, etc. Just common sense.)

Agreed. I have skinks scattered around my house in different rooms with different activity and noise levels. One is in my living room, the highest traffic room in the house. She regularly deals with high foot traffic in and out of the kitchen, a large dog that occasionally barks at her, the TV, and the vacuum constantly running a few days a week. None of that really fazes her. In fact, I think they become better conditioned in the long run to human interaction than skinks that are left alone in a quiet room and do not regularly deal with such external factors. Your skink may be a bit skittish at first, as many skinks tend to be in a new environment, but they quickly settle in and learn that they are safe in their enclosure, despite what's happening outside.

That’s what we were thinking would be best so it always had something interesting to observe and got used to the “semi controlled chaos” so to speak, thanks for all the information. The enclosure will be well fortified and toddler proofed.

Yes, they are quite adaptable and get used to your living conditions. I've got a friend that has one in her room that runs for the hide every time you walk in, definitely not used to people walking around.
